After the governor of the state of Guerrero in Mexico introduced a bill to legalize abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, a poll has found 89 percent of residents oppose abortion and only 11 percent support it.

At the same time, 65 percent said they accept abortion in cases of rape, and 66 percent said they accept abortion when the baby presents an abnormal development.

The participants of the poll, conducted by the Votia firm from June 6-8, who were against abortion associated it with the words “death,” “evil,” “irresponsibility,” and “injustice.”  Four out of ten residents of Guerrero related abortion to “murder” and five out of ten considered “abortion” and “murder” to have the same meaning.

Only 2 percent of respondents considered abortion a woman’s “decision.” Ninety-three percent approved the idea of including the sentence “the life of a human being will be protected from the moment of conception” as a constitutional amendment.

“The results show what I have been saying since the beginning of the debate,” said Guerrero deputy Ana Lilia Jiménez Rumbo, who published the results of the poll. “Legislators are elected through the secret and free vote of the citizens of Guerrero, and this poll points out the majority opinion among the citizens of the state; that is why we must listen to them, and we should make our laws based on this fact.” Jimenez Rubio is president of the Commission of Equity and Gender of Guerrero’s Congress.

A total of 800 people participated in the poll. It’s reliability level is 95 percent and the margin of error is plus or minus 3.9 percent.
