MONTREAL (LSN) - On the heels of the recent provincial and federal government attempts to remove from parents the right to religiously based schooling in Newfoundland, Quebec’s legislature is pushing Ottawa for similar plans.

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Stephane Dion announced today that Quebec will probably get a constitutional amendment by Christmas allowing it to create linguistically-based school boards and do away with the religiously-based system. The Canadian constitution has guaranteed the maintenance of Protestant and Catholic boards in Montreal and Quebec City since 1867. Implementation of the new system is hoped to begin next school year.
