TOKYO, July 8 (LSN) - Li Xuemei, a Chinese woman who fled her country’s one-child policy, applied for refugee status in Japan but was instead charged. The prosecutor aiming to imprison Li for a year said “Childbirth cannot be the only purpose for coming (to Japan) illegally. We cannot allow her emergency relocation to Japan.” Ayako Mizuno, Li’s lawyer said, “The accused has undergone forced abortion and her flight from a present danger qualifies her as a refugee.” A ruling on the case is expected next Wednesday.
