AUCKLAND, Sept 25 (LSN) - After failing to receive family permission to remove the ventilator from a two- month old baby born suffering from Mobius Syndrome and Polands anomaly, doctors at the National Women’s Hospital have sought permission from the New Zealand High Court to override the will of the parents. The hospital is demanding that the baby be made a ward of the court so that the courts can allow the hospital’s clinical director Dr. David Knight to decide what is in the best interests of the child. Knight has advocated removing the child from treatment. In presentations to the court, experts representing the hospital have called keeping the baby alive “futile” and “inhumane” claiming that the efforts are only prolonging suffering and death. The parents’ lawyer Christopher Harder said his clients wish to “care for and comfort the baby as she is dying’’ and continue to object to the hospital’s request to be allowed to end her treatment. The parents are in search of medical advice and help in the case and their lawyer has set up an internet site to assist their efforts.
