NEW YORK, NY, Apr 8 (LSN) - On Wednesday, John Cardinal O’Connor and New York State’s six diocesan bishops sent a message to New York Attorney-General Eliot Spitzer denouncing her plans to expand a buffer zone around the state’s 13 abortuaries. The attorney general’s move comes just prior to the pro-life demonstration “Operation Save America’’ which is scheduled to begin April 18. Billed as an attempt to avert violence, Spitzer initiated the move which forbids protests within 60 feet of abortion mills and also forbids protesters outside the zone from using loud speakers. By calling for the expansion of the buffer zones Spitzer is implicitly accusing pro-lifers of being responsible for violent abortion-related activity. Despite the lack of evidence to justify such a link. “Such unjust and arbitrary accusations not only hurt and violate the rights of those accused, but also may have a chilling effect on all who cherish their constitutionally protected First Amendment rights to speech, assembly and expression,’’ said the bishops.
