LANGLEY, BC, Dec 10 (LSN.ca) - The Supreme Court of Canada announced yesterday that it would hear the case of the British Columbia College of Teachers (BCCT) vs Trinity Western University (TWU), a Christian university whose teacher certification program was refused approval by BCCT because of the university’s Christian beliefs. Two lower court decisions have ordered the BCCT to accredit the university’s program, but the Supreme Court has suspended those decisions with its granting of a hearing. The B.C. College of Teachers contends that Trinity Western’s teacher education graduates may be biased against homosexual students in the public school classroom because of the university’s policy on homosexual behavior. All Trinity Western students sign a community standards agreement, which states they will refrain from extramarital sex while attending the university, including premarital sex, adultery and homosexual behavior. TWU’s Executive Vice President Guy Saffold said “Now that we are at the level of the Supreme Court of Canada, we are looking at a legal decision that will be significant in defining what religious freedom will ultimately mean in Canadian society.
