OTTAWA, Feb 15 (LSN) - Most pro-lifers and other social conservatives are approaching the Reform- instigated United Alternative convention with a great deal of apprehension. Social conservatives always seem to be expected to give the most in political negotiations and the UA convention, taking place this weekend, isn’t expected to be any different. Nevertheless, social conservatives are expected to be at the conference in good numbers to represent our views and to respectfully communicate the message that “conservatism” is not conservative unless it respects the truth about life and family. Social conservatives are looking forward to the impact they can have as they engage in dialogue. Pro-family forces are reminded that the outcome of the United Alternative Conference has to be brought back to the Reform Party membership for a vote. As a result, the principles affirmed at the conference cannot diverge too far from current Reform Party principles without risking its rejection by grassroots Reformers. Nevertheless, this reality cannot justify a weakening in the commitment of pro-life forces to engage the process as pro-actively as possible because history is full of examples of the most unexpected things happening when one is the least prepared for them.
