Ontario Legislature Rebuffs Ruling To Cease Prayer TORONTO, Mar 24 (LSN.ca) - The Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) has threatened the Ontario Legislature with a lawsuit to force it to abandon its use of the Lord’s Prayer to open its sessions and to compel Ontario municipal governments to do the same. Keith Landy, Ontario region president of the CJC, says municipalities are defying a September Ontario Supreme Court decision outlawing the prayer at public municipal council meetings. Speaker Gary Carr rebuffed the threat Thursday saying that parliamentary privilege protected the provincial legislature from having to abide by the ruling. Numerous Members of the Legislature spoke out in defense of the use of the prayer. While municipalities aren’t protected by parliamentary privilege, many have retained the prayer since the province has not amended the Municipal Act to reflect the court ruling. The CJC is demanding the amendment but the province has not yet decided on a course of action.
