NEW YORK, Sept 13 (LSN.ca) - Reporting on the State of the World Forum for WorldNetDaily, Mary Jo Anderson covered a round-table discussion featuring prominent leaders discussing the power of the United Nations to trump national sovereignty. Filmed by the BBC, the round-table included U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs James Rubin, UN high commissioner of human rights, Mary Robinson and billionaire Canadian financier George Soros. Robinson and Soros are strong abortion supporters. It also involved panelists Gen. Romeo Dallaire, former UN commander in Rwanda and Sir Brian Urquhart, former UN undersecretary general.
Rubin was frustrated with the UN bashing while Dallaire expressed “ire” at the Security Council for failing to act to stop the Rwandan massacre and repudiated claims to national sovereignty. Robinson called for greater capacity for UN missions by strengthening financial support, providing troops and a defined mechanism for taking action.
Anderson paraphrases Soros as saying “the UN Charter was written in terms of states and each country defending its own interests - an international patronage system. What is needed now, he said, is a lot more power to the secretary general - a ‘centralized power’ required for a new, improved United Nations in the 21st century.” Rubin replied, “Soros is right: Is the UN for the member nations? Some emphasize ‘secretary’ while others emphasize ‘general.’”
