OTTAWA, August 1, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Liberal Senator Laurier L. LaPierre, appointed to the Senate last year by Prime Minister Jean Chretien, has rudely insulted Canadian citizens who are sending emails and letters to Senators asking them to defend the traditional definition of marriage. Senator LaPierre responded to such emails by telling one constituent “Get a life!” and telling another “I am tired of all these sily (sic) letters written by a bunch self-serving religious zealots .” The email communications signed by Senator LaPierre, derided the pro-family interpretation of Scripture suggesting that marriage should be restricted to one man and one woman. “At the end of the day and in spite of your—- and that of your cohorts——perverted understanding of the message of Christ: the Canadian Way will win: for we are a tolerant and just society dedicated to equality, justice for all, diversity, and inclusion for all our people,” said LaPierre. He called the traditional interpretation “a perversion of the message of the Gospel, especially of the all encompassing and loving Christ!” Earlier this year Senator LaPierre made a speech in the Senate in support of homosexual marriage. During the speech he proclaimed his homosexuality and compared the Catholic church to the Taliban.
