LOS ANGELES, August 20, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The California state Assembly passed a bill on Monday which aims to “ban” the state’s legislators from ever trying to outlaw abortion. The bill, which passed 44-23, was sponsored by senator, Sheila Kuehl and passed the Senate earlier this month. Kuehl’s Act is an attempt to bind California from hypothetically passing a law to “deny or interfere with a woman’s fundamental right to bear a child or to choose or obtain an abortion,” and includes “non-surgical [chemically-induced] abortions” prescribed by non-medical personnel.
Governor Gray Davis is likely to sign the legislation, especially since he took part in promoting the bill. Spokesman Russ Lopez said “Gov. Davis has been supportive of this bill since it has been introduced.
