HONOLULU, March 8, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The Hawaii House approved assisted suicide Thursday in a 30-20 vote. The measure involved two related bills one which approved a constitutional amendment to allow assisted suicide and a second which set out the rules for the procedure, which were similar to Oregon’s.

The so-called “death with dignity” measure is supported by Hawaii Governor Ben Cayetano, but is not expected to pass in the Senate. Senate Health Committee Chairman David Matsuura has said he would not even hold hearings on the house bills which would effectively stop them. However, Gov. Cayetano has publicly asked Matsuura to allow them to be voted on in the Senate.
