ZAGREB, January 24, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Government of Croatia sparked furor in the legislature today as it introduced amendments to existing family law which would give legal recognition to cohabitating homosexual couples.  Prominent legislators in the largely Catholic country condemned the bill which has weak support since members of the coalition government oppose the measure.  A legislator from the Croation Party of Rights called the bill “unacceptable” noting that the bill is “a step toward equalizing families and gay couples.”  Ljubica Lalic, a Member of the Peasants’ Party - part of the governing coalition, agreed saying: “We cannot consider their relations the same as a family or a heterosexual couple.”
