NEW DELHI, March 6, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Hindustan Times reports that trials on drugs which cause abortions through the second trimester of pregnancy are underway at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences. The paper notes that the abortifacient “morning after pill” preceded the effort to introduce the abortion pill. Suneeta Mittal, Principal Investigator and head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at AIIMS said that the abortion pill would help with the 6.7 million registered cases of induced abortion in the country on an average in a year.
The Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Sushma Swaraj, will inaugurate a National Consortium to consider administration of the drugs by non-doctors. See the Hindustan Times coverage: http://www.hinduonnet.com/stories/2003030607811200.htm
