WAVERLEY, Nova Scotia, April 2, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Because of recent disturbing developments and the imminent call of a federal election, Ed Mullen, a long-time Canadian pro-life leader from Nova Scotia, felt compelled to write an open letter to his bishop and other clergy. In the letter Mullen asks Canada’s Catholic religious leaders to provide stronger leadership to convince voters to elect principled candidates who will, above all, act to protect life. Mullen lists the names of prominent U.S. and Canadian Catholic politicians who have been allowed to call themselves Catholic while actively betraying Catholic principles on abortion and other life and moral issues.
In the hardest hitting paragraph in his letter Mullen states, “Most Catholic bishops and clergy remain silent on the duty of Catholics, as citizens, to vote for pro-life candidates, and to vote against pro-abortion sitting members. They rarely challenge Catholic politicians with anti-life voting records, and in failing to publicly defend the innocents, Catholic clergy create an unfortunate by-product, that is, Catholics in general are misled in belief that nothing can be done to stop abortion …, and that we have no collective responsibility, as Catholics, to stop the killing.” The many years experienced pro-life activist concludes, “These beliefs are simply not true”.
