NASHVILLE, TN, February 18, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Southern Baptist Convention committee voted Tuesday to leave the Baptist World Alliance, claiming that the Alliance has become too liberal and is promoting “aberrant and dangerous theologies.” The Southern Baptist Convention committee report directed the withdrawal in order “to politely withdraw from an organization that, at least for us, no longer efficiently communicates to the unsaved a crystal clear gospel message that our Lord Jesus Christ is solely sufficient for salvation.” The Southern Baptist Convention represents 16 million Christians in the US, the largest Protestant group, whereas the Baptist World Alliance, established in London in 1905, represents 47 million members world-wide. The report objected to the Alliance promotion of women as pastors, their refusal to talk openly about abortion, and that the Alliance was funding “questionable enterprises.” Read the related Baptist Press coverage at: http://www.baptistpress.com/bpnews.asp?ID=17668
