LONDON, October 13, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Media icon and pop star Madonna said she does not allow her children to watch television because “TV is trash.”

“My kids don’t watch TV,” she said. “We have televisions but they’re not hooked up to anything but movies.”

An unlikely moralizer on matters of media – Madonna is famous forÂquite “trashy” performances and productions, including an explicit pornographic book, Sex, published in 1992 – Madonna has obvious sense when it comes to what her children should be exposed to.

“TV is trash,” she added, according to a This is London report. “I was raised without it. We don’t have magazines or newspapers in the house either.”

A study published last fall revealed that teens who view television programs containing a lot of sexual content were twice as likely to become involved sexually at a younger age as teens who watched less.

A 2002 study revealed that people who watch violent or sexually-explicit TV shows are less likely to remember the commercials, compared to viewers of less explicit programming.

A 2003 University of Michigan study adds evidence to the theory that TV violence viewed as children leads to aggressive adult behavior when the children grow up, including spousal abuse and other crimes – no matter how they behaved during childhood. What was new in the study was that girls are affected as much as boys.

Speaking to 1,300 teens gathered at a youth rally last year, Boston Archbishop Sean O’Malley warned against the corrupt influence the “glass idol” of television can have in people’s lives. “The great spiritual sicknesses of our age and our culture come in great part from the extreme individualism and materialism of our age. Television is the pulpit of those influences,” he said.
