Disgraced Researcher Dr. Hwang Woo-SukSEOUL, June 20, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The disgraced Korean researcher, Dr. Hwang Woo-Suk is being tried for fraud, embezzlement and ethics violations. Hwang was indicted on May 12 with five other scientists after their work was revealed to be bogus by an external investigation by a panel of experts at Seoul National University.

Hwang had been hailed as a folk hero in Korea for his claims to have cloned cows and other animals and to have created “patient specific” cloned stem cells, and still enjoys the support of fans who say he was framed. Korean prosecutors are charging Hwang with the disappearance of the equivalent of millions of dollars of government research grants.

The prosecutors said their investigation confirms that of Seoul National University that no cloned stem cells were ever made by Hwang and his team.

If convicted, Hwang could face up to five years in prison.
