BUENOS AIRES, June 1, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Evangelical protestants in Argentina are joining their voices to the nation's Catholics in opposition to proposed legislation to institute homosexual "marriage" in the South American country.

With the slogan, "For marriage with a father and a mother," two Evangelical groups have united with the goal of collecting 50,000 signatures against the legislation, which has already passed the Chamber of Deuputies (the lower legislative house) and is now under consideration by the nation's senate.

The two groups, the Christian Alliance of Evangelical Churches (ACIERA) and the Pentecostal Evangelical Confraternity Federation (FECEP), reportedly include 12,000 different churches in the country.

According to the president of ACIERA, Rubén Proietti, the group's act of protest is "for all citizens of good will who defend matrimony between a man and a woman, for those who regard as fundamental the guarantee of a mother and a father for each child, for those who are not in agreement with accepting the modification of the Civil Code."

"History is being written and we cannot ignore such an aggressive social change that a minority is attempting to impose," Proietti also stated. "We support the idea of a referendum."

The groups held a rally yesterday in front of the Congressional Palace in Buenos Aires to publicize their campaign and make their dissent known to legislators.
