Interview: Music Video Highlights Humanity of Unborn
By James Tillman
March 1, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) — “Unborn,” a song by Christian musician Caitlin Jane and inspired by a friend’s unplanned pregnancy, brings to life a touching message of hope and presents powerful depiction of the humanity of the unborn.
The song’s video shows a young woman collapsing after discovering that she is pregnant. The lyrics give a voice to the voiceless: “I am unborn / I cannot speak when / I am afraid.”
The woman pulls up before an abortion facility as her child continues to speak: “I am alive / My heart is beating … someday I’ll grow up / Just because of you / Who cared enough to love.” The woman decides to pull away from the building.
Later parts of the movie show her watching children playing in the park. The final shot shows her holding her new infant.
According to Ms. Jane, the song came to her after she found out that a college friend faced an unplanned pregnancy.
“When I found out I was so shocked at first,” she told LifeSiteNews.com (LSN), “but really moved by her decision to be brave and keep her baby. Because I know it’s easy for us to say ‘I’ve always been pro-life’ … but [it is different] when it comes to a personal situation, and someone you know actually faces a situation where they have to make sacrifices.”
The writing and singing of the song, she says, has opened her eyes to the experiences of many women.
“Right after I wrote it, I was a little nervous about singing it, not knowing what the response would be, ” she said. “Some of the places I sing aren’t Christian venues. … It’s nerve wracking putting yourself out there.”
Instead, Jane said, she discovered the song had a surprising impact; the room would grow quiet as she sung it.
After the song, she said, “I always have at least someone come up to me and tell me their story,” whether about keeping a child, adoption, or going through abortion.
“It’s been overwhelming; it’s very beautiful though. I’ve had so many people share God’s grace in their lives.”
Jane said that helping tell of this grace has motivated her own life as a musician. “We don’t have a purpose unless its rooted and centered in God and in Christ,” she told LSN. “If we’re aiming just at our own goals and our own success it just ends up being worthless in the end.”
She plans soon to release a DVD featuring both the music video and the experiences of women whom she came to know because of the video.
Jane especially praised the support of crisis pregnancy centers as a means of helping reduce abortion.
“Sometimes people think they can’t do anything [to stop abortion]” she said. “I strongly believe women want another option. They don’t want too have abortion, a lot of them. But they feel like they have to.
“So if we get the truth out there, then they’re able to choose another option. “
