VATICAN, Oct 3 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Catholic World News reported last week that St. Thomas More, executed in 1535 for refusing to condone King Henry VIII’s immoral divorce, is to become the patron saint of politicians. On November 5, at a global gathering of politicians, More will be proposed by Pope John Paul II as “a model and intercessor for all those who consider their political commitment as a choice of life.”

Holding up St. Thomas More as a model for politicians, the pope is sending a clear message to Catholic politicians - that they must be willing to stand up for Christian principles, especially on moral issues, even when such faithfulness involves a heavy cost, political or otherwise. The message is particularly poignant at this time considering the upcoming elections in Canada and the US. For Canada, the message is sorely needed, as it is the only country in the world where “Catholic” politicians have, on their own initiative, introduced, passed and adamantly protected the legalization of abortion.
