TORONTO, Ontario, March 8, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – As Parliament considers a motion calling on legislators to consider whether the unborn ought to be recognized as “human beings” under the law, Canada’s largest pro-life group has launched a website to show that life begins at the moment of conception.

Campaign Life Coalition announced Thursday the launch of IamaHumanBeing.ca, an educational tool that presents the scientific basis for why every human life should be protected from the time of conception to natural death.

The initiative is meant to support motion M-312, introduced by Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth (Kitchener-Centre). The motion seeks to establish a special committee to re-examine of section 223 of Canada’s Criminal Code, which states that a child only becomes a “human being” once he or she has fully proceeded from the womb.

“This website confirms what is already known but not yet acknowledged by Canadian law – that a child in the womb is a human being, from the moment of conception,” said Jim Hughes, President of Campaign Life Coalition. “This is not a matter of opinion or theory, this is scientific fact. It’s time our government updates the law which states that a child miraculously becomes a human being only at the moment of complete birth.”

Among countless scientists, this view was held by Dr. Jérôme Lejeune, regarded as the father of modern genetics.

“From the moment of fertilization, that is from the earliest moment of biologic existence, the developing human being is alive, and entirely distinct from the mother who provides nourishment and protection,” said Lejeune, who discovered the chromosomal cause of Down syndrome. “From fertilization to old age, it is the same living human being who grows, develops, matures and eventually dies.  This particular human being, with his or her characteristics, is unique and therefore irreplaceable.”

IamaHumanBeing.ca contains images of human development and online videos of 3D ultrasounds that all depict the humanity of the pre-born child. The website also calls Canadians to action, to get involved in the political process and to contact their MPs to encourage them to push for a “free vote” on M-312 in order to retain the integrity of Private Members’ business.

“Campaign Life Coalition fully supports efforts in Parliament that reflect modern-day medical science and provide legal protection for all human beings from conception to natural death,” said Mary Ellen Douglas, National Organizer of Campaign Life Coalition.
