LIMA, Peru, November 1, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In the midst of a raging debate over abortion and same-sex unions, Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani of Lima has exhorted Peruvians in a recent homily not to “allow the world to play at destroying families.”

“Long live parents, children, grandchildren and grandparents, because family is a wonderful thing,” the prelate said.

In the past weeks, Peru has faced a debate on whether or not to allow the so-called “therapeutic” abortion. This includes the possibility that having the baby affects the mother’s “mental health.” In countries like Spain, 97 percent of abortions have been performed for this reason.

Peru forbids abortion except in cases where the health or life of the mother are at risk, with statistics showing that 87 percent of Peruvians oppose the liberalization of abortion.

Congress has also been presented a motion to legalize gay unions, though not calling them “marriages.” Another survey found that 70 percent of the population opposed that measure.

“The Lord tells me we should protect the family,” Cirpriani declared.

The family must be a joyful place, because God’s love leads us to spread joy and live with a joyful face,” he declared.

“May others see that we love each other,” he continued. “May parents teach their children from the time they are little. And parents should teach by word and example and have them baptized, so that Jesus can speak to their hearts.”

The archbishop also made an invitation to “visit the sick, keep company to those who are lonely, have compassion for those who suffer.

The homily took place during the solemn Mass of the Lord of Miracles.

Before thousands of attendants he continued: “May the Lord of Miracles teach us to live our faith with joy, we must begin with our children, within our homes. Let us have joy for our faith.”
