The campaign, which took place between September 28 and October 5, drew at least 38 news articles through television, radio, and newspaper, according to a follow-up report released by CLC.

The campaign involved rallies at the provincial legislatures in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Alberta, and Manitoba, and 57 mini-rallies in Ontario outside the constituency offices of Members of Provincial Parliament. The pro-life group also held a tweet-a-thon on October 3 using the hashtag #DefundAbortion.

Throughout the year the pro-life group will continue the campaign with pamphleting blitzes, petitions and MPP lobbying. They also have Defund Abortion rallies planned for British Columbia and Quebec in the spring.

At the Alberta rally, “the atmosphere was so uplifting. The crowd was exuberant and responded to our speeches with spontaneous ‘defund abortion’ chants”, said organizer Sharon Rose-Milan, 24. “There were a lot of young people in the crowd as well, which is a great sign for the future of this provincial initiative. These taxpayers don’t agree with $13-million of their tax dollars being funneled to pay for a medically unnecessary procedure that is morally reprehensible.”

“I have a friend whose family had to move because our province wouldn’t pay for her sister’s life-saving medicine,” said Nova Scotia rally organizer Ellen Chesal in a speech at that province’s event. “Because of financial hardship, the family was forced to move to another province, which covered this drug. I’m sure there are many, many more procedures that our province does not cover.  And yet they find the funds to pay for abortions costing us taxpayers $1000 for the killing of an innocent child!”

The mini-rallies in Ontario ranged in size from only a few to up to around 80-90 pro-lifers. CLC’s report gives details on each rally along with photos, videos, and links to news coverage.
