WILMINGTON, DE, June 7, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Delaware public health officials have allowed a Planned Parenthood facility that two former nurses likened to a “meat-market” to reopen.

State officials allowed the Planned Parenthood office in Wilmington to go back into business after accepting the state chapter's plan to correct the 14 health and safety violations inspectors found in April.

On Thursday, Department of Health and Social Services spokeswoman Jill Fredel said inspectors assured the changes were being underway.

“I am thrilled to share that we have met every requirement of the state of Delaware’s health department, and auditors from the state this week conducted another unannounced site visit to reconfirm that we are delivering high quality care,” wrote Ruth Lytle-Barnaby, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Delaware in an op-ed in The News Journal.

The diagnosis is a vast change from what inspectors with the Delaware Division of Public Health found when they paid the office an unannounced visit.

State officials said Planned Parenthood engaged in “unsafe and unsanitary practices.”

The state and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited the facility, and state Attorney General Beau Biden called its abortionist, Dr. Timothy Liveright, “a clear and immediate danger to the public.”

Two former nurses, Joyce Vasikonis and Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich, testified about the conditions – and Planned Parenthood's inaction – before the Delaware State Senate last month.

Vasikonis, who has describes herself as “rabidly pro-abortion,” said, “It would take me all afternoon to describe all the deficiencies I found at Planned Parenthood of Delaware during the 10 months I worked there.”

The nurses described how bloody gloves were reused, instruments were left unsterilized, and drugs were administered by untrained staff.

“What I found was that the culture of Planned Parenthood of Delaware was focused on maximizing profits and the bottom line, not quality health care for women,” Vasikonis said.

She stated after the two repeatedly contacted Planned Parenthood of Delaware, “There was no real response to fix it.”

The “culture” of malfeasance “seemed to seep out of the walls. It seemed to infect everybody, and the people it didn't infect were attacked for [holding] different views.”

Dr. Liveright agreed last weekend that Planned Parenthood had turned a deaf ear toward its employees' complaints.

“Planned Parenthood is partly to blame for all this,” he said. “They've allowed this circus to continue. It's partly because they never listened to these women to begin with.”

State officials at multiple agencies also ignored their concerns.

In the first few months of this year pro-life activists witnessed ambulances visiting the clinic five times.

Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich, who quit her job as a nurse in the office after 27 days, told Jill Stanek Liveright would ogle, slap, or play peek-a-boo with his patients.

He would also sing hymns to Jesus while performing abortions, including one with the lyrics: “Jesus, oh Jesus, take the sinners down by the river, Oh Jesus.”

Liveright dismissed all concerns, including conerns that he perforated a woman's uterus, as “a tempest in a teapot.”

Bartle went further, describing some of the nurses' allegations as “just untrue,” although she admits “that we did not always meet” all the state's standards.

“Our community expects Planned Parenthood to be a gold standard of health care,” she wrote.

After the raid, the state affiliate closed the facility for “cleaning,” fired some employees, and insisted all was well. But critics are not convinced.

“She’s still saying nothing substantiates what we said,” Vasikonis said. “What is wrong with her? Clearly, she’s not owning up to anything.”
