Nick Herbert, the Conservative Party’s Shadow Secretary of State for Environment and an open homosexual, said on Wednesday that the Conservative party believes the “vital” institution of marriage should be extended to “same-sex relationships” and that homosexual partners should be allowed to adopt children. Speaking at a debate at the libertarian Cato Institute in Washington DC on the theme “Is there a place for gay people in conservatism and conservative politics?” Herbert said that conservatives make a mistake in rejecting the “equality” agenda that is the core of the homosexualist political movement. “The truth is that there are millions of people who we drove away but who share our values and want to join us. Gay people are not the property of the left, nor of any party,” he said. For conservatives to adopt the homosexualist movement’s “equality” agenda, he said in an interview with Metronews, is “not just right on its merits,” but is “a way also of taking politics forward.”Herbert indicated, as has party leader David Cameron, that a Conservative government would seek to legalize “gay marriage,” using the desire of some religious groups like the Quakers, who want to celebrate “gay weddings,” as a pretext. Currently, such groups are prohibited from conducting legally recognized “marriage” ceremonies for homosexuals, although there is no law restricting non-legally binding private ceremonies. Under British law, legally registered civil partnerships are equivalent in almost every respect to marriage.  “We can’t be uninvented,” Herbert said. “Being gay is not a lifestyle choice. Our sexuality is a fact. It may be repressed, but it cannot be changed. Doctors don’t try to change a person’s colour, and healers or politicians shouldn’t try to change anyone’s sexuality.”Quoting Robert Levy, the chairman of the Cato Institute, Herbert said, that the “primary” purpose of the state is to “safeguard individual rights and prevent some persons from harming others.”“Heterosexuals should not be treated preferentially when the state carries out that role. And no one is harmed by the union of two consenting gay people.”Herbert said that the “equality” agenda is an “essential element of modern conservatism.” He boasted that his party leader, David Cameron, had “reshaped” the Conservative party in the U.K. The new Tory party, he said, has “developed a progressive-conservative agenda to secure important social objectives through conservative means.”Last year, Herbert entered into a civil partnership with Jason Eades after living with the latter for ten years. Herbert said that legal “gay marriage” would be a natural counteractive to the notorious promiscuity of homosexual men. “Those who argue against legal recognition for gay partnerships often claim that many gay people have promiscuous lifestyles. But there are few social incentives of the kind which conservatives should naturally embrace for gay people to embrace commitment. So it’s right to recognise commitment in gay partnerships. “Why stand against the extension of a civil institution which demands a public declaration of commitment and stability?”He added, “In the same way, we should reject discrimination against gay couples who wish to adopt.”But Herbert’s claims clash with numerous studies of homosexual relationships that have revealed that the concept of fidelity in a relationship, even one that is “long-term,” is not the same for homosexual men as it is in the wider heterosexual community. Research undertaken in the Netherlands in 2003, showed that male homosexual relationships last, on average, 1.5 years, and gay men have an average of eight partners a year outside of their supposedly “committed” relationships. That study showed that gay men have sex with someone other than their primary partner in 66 per cent of relationships within the first year, rising to 90 per cent after five years.In 2004, an online survey of nearly 8,000 homosexuals found that 71 per cent of same-sex relationships lasted less than eight years with only 9 per cent of all same-sex relationships lasting longer than 16 years.Also, a recent study was added to the long and growing list of peer-review research showing that adoption by homosexuals is harmful to children. A study presented at the symposium in Mexico, “Homosexual Adoption: What Science Has Discovered,” showed that children adopted out to homosexuals have a higher chance of committing suicide.
