Spain’s health ministry has issued a report showing abortion rates over the past 10 years have climbed 72%, to 84,985 in 2004, from the 1995 number of 49,367. Although Spain’s abortion laws officially limit abortion to situations involving rape, malformation of the baby, or threats to the physical or mental health of the mother, 95.7% of all abortions list health concerns of the mother as the reason for the procedure. International pro-life leaders constantly warn nations about permitting the term ‘health’ to be included in any abortion laws. They stress the deliberately vague term has consistently been interpreted in the widest possible sense leading to practical abortion on demand.Spain has one of the lowest birth rates in the world. Abortion rates for the country are one more indication of the plunge into anti-family, anti-life policies the Catholic nation has adopted over the past five years.In 2001 abortifacient birth control was legalized. In 2003 the country allowed the use of human embryos in experimental science, and in June 2005, legislation was passed allowing gay ‘marriage’. The Socialist Spanish government, under Prime MinisterJose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has passed these measures despite strong, organized opposition by the Spanish people. Over 1 million demonstrators gathered in Madrid in June to protest the proposed legislation redefining marriage to include same-sex couples.
