The Democrats needed 218 votes to pass the bill. One Republican voted for the bill. 39 Democrats voted against the bill.The bill includes the Stupak Amendment which basically contains the provisions of the long standing Hyde Amendment prohibiting any coverage of elective abortion by a government program.
