Mr. Diamond said he decided to back Mr. Brison after meeting with most of the prospective candidates.“He’s always demonstrated that he’s bright, capable and energetic, and I think he speaks to a generational change that is really needed right now if we are to appeal to young voters,” Mr. Diamond said in an interview with the Toronto Star.Interestingly, Mr. Diamond did not comment on the recent ethics controversy linking MP Brison to an investigation into possible information leaks, leading to improper income trust trading last November. A spike in trading just prior to the government’s announcement that income trusts would not receive a punitive tax raised concerns of unethical behaviour.ÂAlthough he first denied any memory of his involvement, after the Globe and Mail broke the story last month Mr. Brison admitted he sent an email to a banking friend the day before the government’s announcement. Brison also admitted the RCMP questioned him during their subsequent investigation. He denies he had access to any private information on the government’s decision.Also in November, Brison was forced to make a public apology to PM Harper, then leader of the Conservative party, and the National Citizens Coalition, for falsely accusing Mr. Harper of breaking federal lobbying laws while he was president of the NCC. Mr. Brison admitted he had lied after the NCC threatened to sue for libel.Brison’s behaviour towards a Liberal Party campaign volunteer garnered him some additional bad press when it was reported that he told the woman “you can kiss my ass” during a disagreement. Sandra McGrath had just told Brison she would not be helping him in his next election campaign when he made the comment.“He got very upset,” McGrath said. “He looked at me and said, “Well I’ve got something to tell you. I’m going to be the MP for a very, very long time, and you can kiss my ass.’”A one-time member of the Progressive Conservative Party, Brison defected to the Liberals in 2003.Diamond said Brison has demonstrated that he is a true liberal. In fact, he says, “[Brison’s] vision is much more Liberal than many members of our own caucus.”“In the time that he has been a member, he has demonstrated that he is a true liberal. He believes in prosperity and that should be balanced with a social conscience and a progressive social agenda.”The Young Liberals of Canada have spent much of their energy in the last two years promoting the agenda of gay activists and offering particular support for the gay “marriage” legislation. Other issues of top concern for the group have been the legalization of marijuana and a push to bring in legal prostitution.Brison has not yet formally announced his decision to run for the leadership, which will be decided on the first weekend of December.
