HOLLYWOOD, CA, May 9, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Three producers have reached their goal to raise $2.1 million to make a “true crime” movie about Kermit Gosnell.
Phelim McAleer, Anne McElhinney, and Magdalena Segeida raised the hefty sum from an impressive 23,524 donors in 39 days, just four days before their deadline.
Had they failed to reach their goal, McAleer told LifeSiteNews, they would not have received a dime of the money donated to them.
Although the trio had worked together on such documentaries as FrackNation, they envision this project as a biopic of Kermit Gosnell, the late-term “house of horrors” abortionist convicted of murdering newborn babies outside the womb. Last month, McElhinney told the Rush Limbaugh show that the film may focus on the forgotten “heroes” of the ordeal, such as women who changed their mind about aborting at Gosnell's facility and the few journalists who worked to bring the story to national prominence.
Their efforts have been endorsed by Hercules star Kevin Sorbo and his wife Sam, former U.S. Senator Jim DeMint, Drama Queen star Sloane Brown, and Nick Searcy of Justified.
The producers had to take their crowdfunding efforts to Indiegogo after they were banned from Kickstarter on the basis of what McAleer calls “outright lies.”
Like the Gosnell trial, the media have ignored the proposed film, instead covering a $1.4 million Spike Lee movie. Undeterred, they are pressing forward to bring the story of how Gosnell could operate in the open for so long to the screen, possibly in a made-for-TV format.
“There are people out there who are tired of seeing their values belittled on TV, and Kermit Gosnell is a perfect story for this,” McAleer told LifeSiteNews.
