LOS ANGELES, February 3, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – A former high-end restaurateur who slipped his pregnant girlfriend an abortifacient drug, causing her to miscarry, was sentenced to nine years in prison last week.

Prosecutors said Joshua Woodward secretly gave Gail Greaves the abortion drug in 2009 when she was 13 weeks along, a report from the Miami Herald said, drugging pickles in her refrigerator and rubbing crushed misoprostol pills in her vagina during the course of a sexual encounter.

“Do you not understand that you are a textbook psychopath?” Greaves asked Woodward Friday at his sentencing in Los Angeles County Superior Court. “Do you really not understand what you've done to me, yourself, your family? You took my choice away.”

“I get to see you sitting there right now with no remorse,” Greaves said. “You are a sick, sick individual, and you are disgusting. You don't care who you hurt as long as you get what you want.”

Greaves miscarried in October 2009.

Woodward performed internet searches for “evil ways to terminate a pregnancy” and “ways men have forced abortions” in the weeks before his encounters with Greaves.

He pleaded no contest to attempted murder back in November, facing life in prison. Prosecutors expect him to serve at least 85 percent of the nine-year sentence.

Prior to being arrested, Woodward had run restaurants in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami, where he co-owned two restaurants with television celebrity chef Govind Armstrong.

Prosecutor Habib Balian said, “We are extremely pleased to bring closure to this victim for this horrific crime.”

There have been numerous instances of men slipping abortifacients to pregnant mothers, intending for them to miscarry.

A Kansas man faced a murder charge after giving his pregnant girlfriend misoprostol, and that same year a New York man was accused of forcibly inserting the drug into his pregnant girlfriend's womb. A Florida man was sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison also in 2014 for tricking his ex-girlfriend into taking misoprostol.
