TORONTO, October 2, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In a September 29 letter sent to Campaign Life Coalition National President Jim Hughes, the Liberal Party of Canada has affirmed that the Party “opposes reopening of the debate concerning a woman’s right to choose.”  The letter, signed by Party President Doug Ferguson, adds, “The Liberal Party of Canada will not support any legislation that undermines a woman’s right to choose or that threaten a woman’s ability to access safe abortion services in Canada.”

On euthanasia and assisted suicide the Party says it recognizes that they “are illegal in Canada.”  The letter says, “The Liberal Party recognizes that euthanasia and assisted suicide are illegal in Canada, and a new Liberal government would not plan to change the laws governing these issues.”  It adds, “We would, however, continue to listen closely to the views of Canadians on these and other end-of-life issues.”

The letter was dated one day after Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper said that a Conservative government would not permit the abortion debate to be reopened.  “This government will not open, will not permit anyone to open the abortion debate,” said Harper.
