APPLE VALLEY, CA, May 19, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A California woman and her military husband say their tiny baby's struggle for life after being born at 22 weeks proves that all babies are worth trying to save.

Decklen Maize was born on May 12, a mere eight inches long and weighing 14 ounces. He was born at that early date after it was found that he had an umbilical cord prolapse. According to the Cleveland Clinic, this situation “can result in a loss of oxygen to the fetus, and may even result in a stillbirth.”

Decklen's father, James Maize, said that he and his wife Carrie decided “that we wanted to try to save him, so they rushed [Carrie] back for a C-section.” Last year, they saw their daughter die at 22 weeks, so they wanted to give Decklen a chance at life.

“If he’s a fighter, you know, we want him to fight,” James told CBS.

James, who is stationed in Virginia, flew out for the birth of Decklen. He and his wife are asking for prayers on a Facebook page dedicated to their son, who will spend months connected to machines, under doctor care.

“I hope this teaches people that little babies are worth fighting for!” James posted on Facebook. “Decklen is fighting a tough battle and is over coming it all! Never be deceived by someone's small size. Our son is our hero!”

Nearly 11,000 people have “liked” the Facebook page. On it, the Maizes have regular postings about their son, including one describing how “Decklen is now sucking on the smallest pacifier I've ever seen. A little step, but was one of the cutest things I have ever seen.”
