WASHINGTON, January 23, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – U.S. Congressman Chris Smith told a rain-soaked crowd at the March for Life Rally Monday to expect serious repercussions for the pro-life movement if President Obama remains in power following the “watershed” election of 2012.

Smith told the crowd of pilgrims gathered on the National Mall that members of “the greatest human rights movement on earth” should work to change both the Democrat-controlled Senate and the White House to end the obstruction to pro-life legislation and the weakening of conscience protections that the Obama administration has presided over.

“The weakening and systematic undermining of conscience protections are at the top of Mr. Obama’s wish list,” said Smith, the co-chair of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus and a leader on Capitol Hill against abortion.

The congressman condemned a laundry list of abortion advancements under the Obama administration, including having “coerced virtually all health insurers” to pay for all birth control, including abortifacient birth control such as Ella, a sister drug to RU-486, and for denying a longstanding federal grant to the U.S. Catholic bishops for their anti-trafficking working because of the bishops’ objection to abortion.

This record, he said, “is a mere foretaste—a mere foreshadowing—of what will be if he is reelected,” pointing to the damage that would be inflicted on the pro-life movement with more pro-abortion judicial appointments and more time for Obama to wield “the coercive power of the state to compel abortion conformity and complicity.”

“Tomorrow night President Obama will issue a call to ‘return to American values’ in his state of the union address. I remind him: Mr. President, the violent destruction of children in the womb—killing babies—is not an American value,” said Smith.

“The 2008 election gave America the ‘Abortion President.’ The 2010 election gave America the most pro-life House of Representatives ever. The 2012 election is the most important watershed election ever,” Smith concluded. “No one who values life can sit this one out.”

Rep. Smith’s full remarks are below:

Thank you for being an important part of the greatest human rights movement on earth—the selfless struggle by prayer, fasting and works to defend and protect all weak and vulnerable persons from the violence of abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia.

A special thank you to the courageous women who are “silent no more”, who at great personal sacrifice, show post-abortive women the way to reconciliation and healing.  You are a powerful deterrent to women contemplating abortion or under pressure to abort and to everyone else—especially Congress, the Supreme Court and the President—your witness cries out: women deserve better than abortion!

As the co-chair of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus, I am proud to stand with so many outstanding lawmakers in defense of life. As you know, under the extraordinary leadership of Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Cantor, the House has overwhelmingly approved HR 3—the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, the Protect Life Act and has voted to completely repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood.

Now we must work to change the Senate and reclaim the White House which not only obstructs pro-life legislation but has for the past three years advanced abortion in so many ways, while not even attempting to appear to be working to make abortion “rare” and offering support to women to choose life.

The weakening and systematic undermining of conscience protections are at the top of Mr. Obama’s wish list as well as the “integration” of abortion into national and international programs.

For starters, Mr. Obama has now ordered—coerced—virtually all health insurers including faith based institutions to pay for all means of preventing pregnancy including subsidizing abortifacients like ELLA and Plan B.  Everyone must comply regardless of moral objections or religious tenets simply because Obama says so.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has had a federal grant to assist human trafficking victims under a law I wrote and did a superb job according to professional reviewers. This past fall, the USCCB was blatantly discriminated against and thrown out of the program simply because they wouldn’t refer for abortions.

Under Mr. Obama, the federal government has given over $100 million to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) despite the fact that the organization supports and co-manages China’s barbaric one child per couple population control policy that relies on coercion—forced abortion and forced sterilization—to achieve its ends.

By executive order, Mr. Obama reversed another pro-life policy and today lavishly funds embryo-destroying stem cell research despite the fact that adult stem cells are efficacious, ethical and the future of regenerative medicine.

For the past three years, the President has surreptitiously embedded pro-abortion activists in key positions in his Administration to make policy and dole out grant money to their former colleagues and friends in pro-abortion organizations. These pro-abortion organizations including Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and International Planned Parenthood Federation, are now titled the “partners” of the US government both in the US and abroad promoting an ugly image of an America that seeks to legalize abortion on demand around the world.

Tomorrow night President Obama will issue a call to “return to American values” in his state of the union address. I remind him:

Mr. President, the violent destruction of children in the womb—killing babies—is not an American value.

Mr. President, Americans by an overwhelming majority oppose abortion on demand and value the lives of women and unborn children.

Mr. President, stop imposing abortion policies on American institutions and religious organizations. America values religious freedom.

Mr. President, abortion is not, never was, and never will be an American value.

Stop forcing abortion on America and the world!

The past three years of abortion extremism by President Obama is a mere foretaste—a mere foreshadowing—of what will be if he is reelected.

Mr. Obama’s abortion extremism will significantly worsen in a second term.

Given four more years, Mr. Obama will further pack the courts—including and especially the US Supreme Court—with litmus-tested pro-abortion judges perched to retain the infamous holdings of Roe.

Unhindered and unfettered by any concern over a future election, Mr. Obama will aggressively use the coercive power of the state to compel abortion conformity and complicity. The predictable consequence:  more dead babies, more wounded moms.

The 2008 election gave America the “Abortion President”.

The 2010 election gave America the most pro-life House of Representatives ever.

The 2012 election is the most important watershed election ever.

Make no mistake about it; with so much at stake, we don’t have the luxury of disunity or nominee disappointment or apathy. No one who values life can sit this one out.

Failure to unite and mobilize sends the abortion industry’s enabler-in-chief—Barack Obama—back to the White House.  For the sake of the innocent, failure is not an option.
