New Romney ad: 'Abortion should be an option'
WASHINGTON, D.C., October 17, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) - Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign has released a new ad stating the candidate believes that “abortion should be an option” in cases of rape, incest, and to save the life of the mother.
The ads feature a woman named Sarah Minto, who said pro-Obama ads painting the governor as an anti-contraception and anti-abortion extremist made her investigate his real record.
“Romney doesn’t oppose contraception at all,” she said. “In fact, he thinks abortion should be an option in cases of rape incest, or to save a mother’s life.”
“This issue’s important to me, but I’m more concerned with the debt our children will be left with,” Minto says.
The spot concludes, “I’m Mitt Romney, and I approve this message.”
The ad will air in the swing states of Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The ad appears to be an effort to counter a flood of TV and radio ads from Planned Parenthood, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and the Obama campaign, claiming that Romney opposes all abortions, even if the mother’s life is at stake. The Obama campaign has released yet another ad focused on Planned Parenthood funding last week, and Planned Parenthood has invested another $800,000 in its already robust campaign on behalf of the most pro-abortion president in history.
The Obama campaign believes emphasizing abortion, contraception, and Planned Parenthood funding will help the president open a lead among unmarried women, a strongly Democratic constituency.
Polls released Monday show Obama leading by a single point among women in 12 swing states. In 2008, Obama carried women by 13 percentage points.
Yet in pivoting to the center, Romney risks losing his party’s conservative base, long a problem for the former governor of Massachusetts.
However disappointing to his pro-life base, the commercial agrees with Romney’s long-held positions. Many pro-life and other social conservative leaders have taken the position that, although Romney’s position on life and family issues is notably weak, he is far preferable to another four years of Barack Obama, considered to be the most extreme pro-abortion president in American history and a danger to family life, fundamental freedoms and the financial viability of the nation.
At Wednesday night’s debate, Romney said, “Every woman in America should have access to contraceptives” – he simply did not believe employers should be forced to pay for them.
His campaign has long made clear, “A Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape.”
Inquiries to the Romney campaign were not immediately returned.
