MUSHANDIKE, Zimbabwe, May 22, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A newborn baby girl survived three days after being buried alive by her mother, according to testimony offered in court on Tuesday.

The girl was discovered by family members in a shallow grave in Zimbabwe, still alive.

Grace Chikwati had gotten pregnant from an extra-marital affair she had while her husband was working in South Africa. Soon, the boyfriend left her, as well.

To conceal the pregnancy, Chikwati gave birth, wrapped the girl in a cloth, then buried her in a shallow grave near the Chinjekwe River on May 12.

When the woman's cousin and two others came to visit from the Mutare, Chikwati said she had suffered a miscarriage. But her relatives objected that she had not had proper tribal ceremonies performed before the burial.

When they arrived at the grave, they found the girl still alive, they say.

They sped the girl to medical treatment at a hospital in Masvingo, where she died on May 17, according to AllAfrica.com.

The woman was charged with infanticide in court on Tuesday.
