WASHINGTON, D.C., October 30, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – This morning, a pro-life campaign to put HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on the hot seat broke through social media into the halls of Congress and back again.

Several pro-life organizations demanded Sebelius come clean about whether the health insurance policies offered through the health exchanges established by the Affordable Care Act cover abortion.

During her testimony from 9 a.m. to approximately noon today, the hashtag #BeTransparent rose into Twitter's trending topics, as did the hashtag #Sebelius.

The social media campaign had been promoted by Americans United for Life, the Alliance Defense Fund, the Susan B. Anthony List, and Students for Life of America.

Throughout the morning, tweets poured in.

Popular pro-life blogger Jill Stanek asked, “Most transparent administration ever? Then y wont u tell me whether my plan covers #abortion? #BeTransparent @Sebelius @HHSGov

AUL's Dan McConchie tweeted: “If you want to pick an #Obamacare plan without #abortion, too bad b/c the exchanges won’t give you that information up front #BeTransparent.”

Dave Barnett said, “Worse than used car salesman. Buyer: Does this car have a transmission? @Sebelius: Won't tell until you buy it. #BeTransparent #abortion

“Obama knows most people oppose taxpayer funding for abortion,” added Michael New, a writer for National Review. “That's why he won't say which Obamacare plans cover abortion #BeTransparent

Cheryl Sullenger of Operation Rescue said Sebelius has a history of deception going back to her days as governor of Kansas, when she attended private parties with late-term abortionist George Tiller. Her administration is accused of shredding documents to cover up abortionists' violations of the law. Sullenger wrote, “Covered up for criminal abortionists in KS. Now covering up abortion coverage in Obamacare. @Sebelius #BeTransparent for once!”

But the event's greatest success came when Congressman John Shikmus, R-IL, asked Sebelius directly if a citizen who “has strongly-held pro-life views…can understand if they’re going to buy a policy that has abortion coverage or not.”

“Here we go,” someone, presumably Sebelius, can be heard saying in the video.

“I don't know,” Sebelius replied to the question. She added, “I know exactly the issue you’re talking about. I will check and make sure that is clearly identifiable.”

After the exchange, Congressman Shikmus joined the tweetfest, adding a link to a YouTube video of the exchange. “This AM I asked Sec Sebelius to #BeTransparent about abortion coverage in Obamacare,” he wrote.

Sebelius told the congressman she thinks her office can produce a list of insurance providers who do not offer abortion coverage in their plans. However, she said she could not be held accountable for “what I don't know.”

Students for Life found that promise dubious, asking, “Who believes @Sebelius will #betransparent by giving @RepShimkus the list of insurers that include abortion? We sure don't.”

The present wording of ObamaCare specifically forbids insurance companies from disclosing whether purchasers will have to pay the $1 abortion surcharge, thus funding abortion against their consciences.

Congressman Chris Smith, R-NJ, introduced the “Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act” (H.R. 3279) earlier this month specifically to address this issue.
