January 27, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – MSNBC’s Craig Melvin interviewed pro-life leader Ryan Bomberger of The Radiance Foundation and TooManyAborted.com the day after Friday’s March for Life and appeared to be unprepared for the pro-lifer’s media-savvy answers.
Melvin cited an MSNBC poll that appeared to show that a majority of Americans are prochoice. “70% of those who were polled now say that they support Roe v. Wade, that it should not be overturned and,” he said, adding that “more than 40% support legal abortions in this country.” He asked Bomberger if “pro-choice” is “the new normal.”
Bomberger responded, pointing out that “41% of those also polled had no idea what Roe v. Wade was.” He also categorized the phrasing of the poll’s question as a “gross inaccuracy” saying, “The poll itself actually lied in one of the questions saying that Roe v. Wade established as the right to abortion up to three months. But Roe v. Wade established abortion up to seven months.”
Bomberger referenced the May 2012 Gallup poll that showed that the 50% of Americans self-identify as pro-life, arguing that that poll is “more reflective” of public sentiment in America than the MSNBC poll.
Melvin then diverted the topic of conversation to gun control, asking if pro-life activists and politicians have a “moral commitment” to also call for stricter gun control laws. Bomberger didn’t take the bait, responding that it would be a “distraction” for the pro-life movement to focus its attention on the gun control debate rather than abortion.

“We never would have abolished slavery if we had to worry about homes… health care… jobs… all those things. We were worried about the injustice of slavery and there was a laser focus on the injustice of slavery.”
“The injustice of abortion is worthy enough of a lot of focus and a lot of passion.”
Melvin questioned Bomberger’s description of the gun control debate as a “distraction.” Bomberber replied, “I don’t think the two are comparable.”
He explained, “If we’re not willing to protect life in the womb, it devalues life after it comes into this world… When we’re talking about 1.21 million abortions a year, it’s not the same thing.”
Bomberger pointed out that 60% of black babies aborted in New York. Melvin then turned the conversation toward a law that is under consideration in New Mexico that would criminalize abortions after rape, considering such abortions as tampering with evidence.
Melvin told his audience that the bill would send rape victims to prison. However, Bomberger corrected him, quoting the text of the bill, “The mother of the child will never be prosecuted.
Bomberger had the last word of the interview, saying, “The issue here is that we talk about protecting women… and any pro-life protection is always fought vehemently against by the pro-abortion lobby.
“These mischaracterizations don’t help inform the American public as to what is really going on.”
