August 28, 2014 — Flanked by 120 law enforcement officers, 300 pro-life demonstrators marched the streets of Salzburg, Austria in peaceful solidarity. Several protesters were detained by police as the marchers carried white crosses, a symbol of the 1,000 human beings massacred every day through legalized abortion in Austria and Germany.

Banners reading “1000 Ungeborene Jeden Tag” (“1,000 Unborn Every Day”) “commemorates the tragedy of unborn human beings who are denied life every day,” said Johannes Bucher, director of HLI-Europe. In partnership with other pro-life organizations including Europrolife and Lifecenters, Bucher plans to organize additional marches to defend life for the voiceless.

The march, held on July 25, processed in a circular path which began and ended at Salzburg’s Domplatz, a popular tourist destination dominated by the Maria Immaculata statue. Organizers chose the date to coincide with the 46th anniversary of Humanae vitae, the encyclical penned by Pope Paul VI, whose beatification ceremony will take place October 19, 2014, at the conclusion of the III Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the family.

According to Bucher, society has accepted an erroneous view, distorted by anti-life ideology. Prenatal infanticide has become a full blown cataclysm that threatens to overwhelm society at every turn, he said.

“Even though it seems our society has lost its balance, our march helps those in society to realize the wrongs associated with abortion,” Bucher said. “These defenseless little brothers and sisters don’t have a voice.”

Bishop Andreas Laun, O.S.F.S., Auxiliary Bishop of Salzburg prays with the pro-life faithful.

Bishop Andreas Laun, O.S.F.S., Auxiliary Bishop of Salzburg, who accompanied the pro-life faithful, said today’s societal mentality that accepts the killing of the unborn infant is a massive attack on Christianity — and God himself.

Bucher added that the solidarity of all Christians is needed for to build a culture of life and love. “We are called to contribute strong witness to the truth and life. Boldly, we want to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and that we trust that God is a God of life and love,” he said.

Meanwhile, pro-abortion protestors, who intended to disrupt the pro-life rally, were held back by law enforcement officers. Abortion advocates demonstrated in a counter rally and displayed hate-motivated posters that dishonored the Church and disrespected the dignity of human life.
