SEATTLE, December 17, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – A socialist activist has revealed she has encouraged indigent women to have later-term abortions, take out payday loans at more than 300 percent interest, and run up credit card bills they could not hope to repay in order to obtain an abortion.

Leela Yellesetty wrote in the Socialist Worker that she spent a week as a volunteer at the Community Abortion Information and Referral (CAIR) Project, a group that provides “help” to poor women who cannot afford an abortion.

“I counseled one woman to put a $3,000 procedure on her credit card—even though she was unemployed and had no way of making payments,”  Yellesetty wrote. “One woman got a payday loan at a 322 percent annual interest rate. I had to ask women if they had any valuables they could sell to the pawnshop, or if it was possible to put off paying some bills for the month.”

“I had to ask women who weren’t as far along if they could delay their procedure another week or two,” she said.

Like many other abortion funds, the CAIR Project does not pay the full price of the termination but provides only “small grants.”

It website states that it once gave a woman $50 for an abortion, because her “conservative family would not have approved of her pregnancy out of wedlock, let alone an abortion.”

Yellesetty wrote instead of spending $15 million to re-elect President Obama, the abortion industry should finance abortion funds like the Seattle-based CAIR Project

The CAIR Project is a member of the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF), which encourages women to consider “lying to a friend or family member” to get money for an abortion. It asks young women to join “medical testing groups” and cultivate their “relationship” with their landlord. It also suggests they drop out of college

CAIR took part in the annual “Bowl-a-Thon for Abortion Access” in April.

Yellesetty added the nation needs “a fighting women’s rights movement”that “says clearly and unapologetically that free access to abortion is fundamental to women’s health and equality—and should be a basic right for all.”
