KOTTE, Sri Lanka, November 25, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Sri Lankan Times reports that the Ministry of Child Development and Women Affairs is considering a move to expand the island nation’s abortion law to allow the killing of unborn children diagnosed as “defective.”

Existing Sri Lankan law allows abortion only if continuation of a pregnancy will endanger a mother’s life.

Secretary of Child Development and Women’s Affairs, Sumithra Rahubadda, said discussions were planned with the Health Ministry and the Ministry of Justice and Law Reforms to change the law to allow abortion if “ultrasound scans and other tests” show evidence that the unborn child is “physically or mentally defective.”
