WASHINGTON, D.C., August 8, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Texas Gov. Rick Perry is set to shake up the 2012 GOP presidential scene by announcing his candidacy on Saturday, according to Politico.

One of the top pro-life figures in the national spotlight, Perry has garnered increasing attention as a potential candidate for high office, publicly making the rounds in several states while keeping his official plans under wraps.

Politico reported Monday that sources familiar with Perry’s plans say the Texas governor will “remove any doubt about his White House intentions” while appearing at a RedState conference in Charleston, South Carolina.

The announcement, slated for the same day as the Ames Straw Poll in Iowa, is expected to “send shockwaves through the race” for the White House, said the D.C. news service. Perry is then slated to travel to New Hampshire, home of the nation’s first Republican primary.
