How does a pro-life voter cast his ballot if both candidates appear equally pro-life, pro-family, and aren’t afraid to buck political correctness when it comes to discussing these controversial issues? This is the dilemma facing life-and-family voters regarding two federal Conservative nominees contending for the redrawn Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner riding in Alberta.

For itself, the national pro-life group Campaign Life Coalition is urging voters to back the incumbent because of his proven record.

At a candidates’ forum on Tuesday, Lethbridge MP Jim Hillyer and former Medicine Hat riding constituency association president Dan Hein did not shy away from answering questions about their position on homosexuality in the public sphere and their position on life.

“I believe the Canadian way is to be decent, reasonable and accommodating, and let people explain themselves, let them live out their lives the way they want. That said, I’m not interested in somebody parading in front of me their sexual preferences, whether hetero or anything else. … I don’t believe it is proper form, I don’t believe it benefits anyone to bring this stuff out in garrish fashion and parade it in the public square,” said Hein, drawing a loud ovation from about one hundred riding members at the forum, reported Medicine Hat News.

Hein added to this that restaurant owners should not be obliged to serve a person in their own business if they don’t want to.

Hillyer, not to be outdone, said that the sexual orientation lobby has hijacked the English language for their own purposes.

“A lot of the trouble with the social and moral issues is the people who don’t share our views on these issues are very clever and very sly. They hijack our language — it’s like 1984 newspeak or doublespeak,” he said.

When asked about their positions on life, Hillyer said he was “pro-life” and Hein stated he was “for babies.”

But Hillyer went even further.

“I have declared, wildly and boldly in my first nomination, that I am pro-life and whenever a pro-life question comes up, I will vote pro-life,” he said.

“I will speak out in favour of pro-life time and time again. … I’ll take a beating for a cause like that every day of the week.”

In July, Hillyer took media flak for stating his view that abortion is “not a human right” in a poll asking constituents their view on the issue.

The mail-out asked two questions:

  1. Do you agree with Jim Hillyer that our government should not use your tax dollars to pay for abortions in other countries?
  2. Do you agree with Jim Hillyer that abortion is not a human right?

Liberal MPs slammed the mail-out, one going as far as calling it “garbage” and “shameful.”

Sharon Rose, executive director of Campaign Life Coalition Alberta, told LifeSiteNews that they are endorsing Hillyer for his “proven” pro-life and pro-family voting record.

“He’s been very outspoken on these issues,” she said.

Conservative Party members in the riding will choose their candidate on Saturday.
