I’ve worked in Washington a long time. Doing so, I’ve met a lot of brilliant people. The capital of the free world attracts many of the best and the brightest.
Most of them come here because they are idealists. But often, they stay long after they are jaded, because this is a very lucrative place to be. You can make a lot of money at perpetuating problems while pretending to work on solutions. Thanks to our 24-hour news cycle, you can even get rich and famous just for writing or talking about it.
Fortunately, not every brilliant person lives in Washington, and they’re not all motivated by money and power.
I know this firsthand, because some of the most brilliant people I’ve ever met are my coworkers at LifeSiteNews.
I joined LSN as the Washington, D.C. Correspondent just a few months ago. Since then, I have been consistently amazed by the talent this news service attracts. My fellow journalists at LSN are some of the best in the business, and our support staff routinely works miracles with our meager budget, expanding our reach and influence far beyond what it “should” be for such a small website.
Believe me when I tell you that any one of these people could be making vast fortunes in DC right now, if only they were willing to “sell out.” I thank God that they are not.
But right now, they are worried. Our operating funds have gotten dangerously low, and we all need this Christmas Campaign to be totally successful in order for us to keep doing the work that we do.
My colleagues’ dedication to the defense of life and family drives them to work long hours for relatively little pay, shining the light of truth on an increasingly dark culture.
None of us are here to get rich. We do what we do because we know it’s important work, and someone has to do it. We’re storing our treasure in heaven, not on Earth.
At the same time, we’re not a bunch of lone rangers or superheroes, forsaking normal human relationships and the trappings of modern life in pursuit of the greater good. We’re regular people with families, mortgages, and bills to pay.
Our work at LifeSiteNews has to put food on the table for 25 full and part-time writers and other staff who have a combined 38 children at home!
Every one of those kids deserves not to go without basic necessities just because their parents have chosen to defend life instead of chasing dollar signs and power.
