WASHINGTON, January 9, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The U.S. Catholic bishops have announced that a “Nine Days for Life” novena will take place this month to mark the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision and to surround the upcoming Washington March for Life with prayer.

“On January 22, 2014, our nation will remember the 41st anniversary of Roe v. Wade,” the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) says on its website.

“Since that tragic decision, more than 55 million children's lives have been lost to abortion, and the lives of millions of their parents have been shattered,” the bishops say. “In prayerful recognition, ‘Nine Days of Prayer, Penance and Pilgrimage’ will take place January 18-26, 2014.”

While not everyone can attend the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., on January 22, the USCCB's Committee on Pro-Life Activities says that Catholics nationwide and around the world can participate in this year's event by joining in the nine days of prayer and sacrifice.

“Your prayers matter. Your sacrifices make a difference,” the bishops state.

For each day of the novena the bishops offer a pro-life focal point for intercessory prayer, a reflection, and suggestions for concrete acts of penance, reparation and charity.

The “Nine Days” program is posted on the USCCB's website.

Participants can also access the material by downloading the cell phone App, by signing up to receive the novena by e-mail here, or choosing to receive a link to each day's novena content as a text message by texting “9days” to 99000.
