SEOUL, Korea, Kuly 26, 2002 (LSN.ca) – With a Korean affiliate of the Raelian cult claiming that it has impregnated a woman with a cloned human embryo, Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare will conduct an on-site inspection of the Cloniad laboratory to see if laws have been violated.  A report in Joongang Ilbo, a South Korean newspaper, says the implanted woman is expected to give birth to a human clone early next year. Human cloning is not yet illegal in Korea and if the parliament votes to ban the practice, the suborned 20-year-old woman would be moved to another country for delivery. Kwak Ki-hwa, a spokesman for Raelian-controlled BioFusion Tech, told reporters this week that 10 women had signed up to act as surrogate mothers for cloned fetuses in the experiment.  Alarmed by the company’s unsubstantiated claims, Korean officials said earlier today that they would fast-track legislation against human cloning. “Whether the claim is true or not, it has become more imperative that we enact such a law at the earliest possible date,” said Kim So-hui at the Ministry of Health and Welfare.  Raelians believe extra-terrestrials started life on Earth and that the human species is a clone from alien life-forms. They recently conducted a leaflet and web-based campaign against the Catholic Church.  For newswire coverage see:  https://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20020726/ap_wo_en_po/skorea_human_cloning_5   and https://www.hankooki.com/kt_nation/200207/t2002072417522241110.htm
