WESTERN AUSTRALIA, May 21 (LSN) – The Western Australian upper house gave final approval today to a law allowing abortion on demand. The new law stipulates that a woman must undergo counselling before opting to abort her child and also must have the support of two doctors. Richard Egan of the Coalition for the Defence of Human Life in Australia noted that by passing the law, parliament had become “a gang of criminals” and vowed to continue the fight for life despite the new law.
NEW YORK, May 21 (LSN) – Timothy Wirth, President of the United Nations Foundation, announced Tuesday that most ($9.3 million) of the money from the first $22 million grant from media mogul Ted Turner to the UN will go to fund programs to address “population and women” (abortion, sterilization and contraception). Turner’s total pledge to the UN was $1 billion over ten years.
MANHATTAN, May 20 (LSN) – Bell Atlantic employee Paul Foray launched a $500,000 lawsuit against his employer yesterday, saying the phone company refuses to give health benefits to his live-in girlfriend, but does give them to the partners of gay employees. Foray’s lawyer Linda Cronin, said, “He is being discriminated against because he is a male with a female domestic partner If he were a female with a female domestic partner, he would get benefits.” Bell Atlantic responded in a statement yesterday, saying, “We believe that our policy on domestic-partner benefits complies fully with all applicable laws and regulations.”
UNITED NATIONS, May 20 (LSN) – United Nations Legal Counsel Hans Corell said Monday that final negotiations for the proposed International Criminal Court (ICC) should be complete before the end of the summer. Corell noted that the UN Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries (decision-making body), will meet from June 15 to July 17 to finalize and adopt a draft statute for the court, to be ratified by the parliaments of individual nations. LOS ANGELES, May 19 (LSN) – In a recent survey of cancer doctors conducted by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), support among MDs for doctor-assisted suicide and euthanasia has fallen dramatically over the last three years. The support for doctor-assisted suicide dropped from 45% three years ago to 22% in the current study, while support for euthanasia in general fell from 22 per cent to 6.5 per cent. PORTSMOUTH, N.H., May 19 (LSN) – According to New Hampshire Right to Life, pro-lifer Deborah Mears was assaulted by police “for no reason.” While protesting outside a National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League fundraiser last Thursday, Mears and other demonstrators were ordered by police to move to the other side of the street.
