DETROIT, June 30 (LSN) – Michael Odette, one of pro-suicide activist Jack Kevorkian’s lawyers, has resigned after pressure from his seven-year-old son. Although Odette maintains that he is sympathetic to Kevorkian’s cause, Kevorkian’s recent move to begin extracting organs from his victims entailed family repercussions for Odette. Explaining his resignation Odette said, “after the organ deal, my 7-year-old son told me, ‘Dad, you shouldn’t represent him. They should throw him in jail and melt the key.’ ““You know, I’ve got a family to think about here. That kind of did it for me.”
EDMONTON, June 30 (LSN) – CBC News reported yesterday that doctors and researchers now living in Canada were “linked” to population-control tactics used against blacks during apartheid in South Africa. CBC named three doctors identified by the commission, all who denied taking part in the population control schemes “Dr. Deon Erasmus and his wife, Antoinette, who now live in Provost, Alta., and Dr. Jack Bothma, an orthopedic surgeon in North Battleford, Sask.” The South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission found that army scientists in South Africa engaged in biological and chemical warfare against blacks in the country. Dr Daan […]
TORONTO, June 30 (LSN) – Sexual health “experts” and pro-abortion advocates reacted with outrage to yesterday’s announcement of the new Ontario sexual education curriculum released by the Tory government which required teachers to teach abstinence to teens but permitted them to leave out controversial issues like abortion, contraception and homosexuality. Selma Savage of the Toronto board of health threatened, “It means they’re going to keep on paying for abortions and unplanned pregnancies.” Contradicting numerous research studies, Savage claimed, “giving them the information does not mean they’re going to go out and have intercourse.” Hazelle Palmer of Planned Parenthood condemned the […]
FREDERICTON, June 30 (LSN) – Yesterday, New Brunswick Finance Department spokesman Stephen Heckbert announced that the province will give survivor pensions to practicing homosexuals. Heckbert claimed that the change was automatic since the federal government has accepted an Ontario court ruling to change the definition of spouse in the Income Tax Act. “The Income Tax Act has been changed and now there’s no longer an exclusion for same-sex partners When the Income Tax Act changes, ours changes automatically, so same sex partners in New Brunswick, at least provincial civil servants, are eligible for survivors’ pensions,” he said. In a related […]
TORONTO, June 29 (LSN) – Ontario’s Education Minister Dave Johnson unveiled the new Ontario sex education curriculum at a press conference today. According to the Canadian Press, teachers would not be forced, in the new curriculum, to teach abortion, contraception and homosexuality. However, all teachers are required to teach abstinence which Johnson referred to as “a positive approach”. Catholic teachers commented that if the initial reports are accurate, the new guidelines for sexual education allow for respect of Christian beliefs on abortion and homosexuality whereas the curriculum put out by the former NDP government in Ontario did not.
VANCOUVER, June 29 (LSN) – Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) has applied to the B.C. Ministry of Health to extend the province’s bubble-zone law to include the hospital. The bubble-zone law forbids pro-lifers from engaging in any demonstration, including silent prayer, within 50 meters of an abortuary. Pro-life activists Maurice Lewis and Jim Demers have been jailed for violating the law by silent, peaceful protests. VGH president Murray Martin told reporters the hospital commits 2,000 abortions a year. Referring to peaceful pro-life demonstrations outside the hospital, he said, “We don’t think it’s appropriate to have patients going through that harassment.” Pro-life […]
LISBON, Portugal, June 29 (LSN) – Yesterday, Portuguese voters rejected a bid to introduce abortion on demand in the largely Roman Catholic country. Only 31% of registered voters took part in the referendum; but of those, 51% voted against a change in the law. Despite the results of the referendum, the ruling Socialist Party plans to go ahead. Portuguese law stipulates that a referendum is binding only when at least 50% of registered voters take part. Portugal’s current abortion law limits the procedure to cases where a pregnancy is thought to endanger a woman’s health, or in cases of pregnancy […]
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, June 29 (LSN) – Last week, Focus on the Family reported that a popular annual all- women concert series called “Lilith Fair” is promoting abortion. Cathy Brown of American Life League told Focus that Lilith Fair has invited Planned Parenthood to attend the concerts and hand out condoms and abortion information to youth in attendance. “When you purchase tickets to Lilith Fair you are helping provide abortions for young people across the country, across the nation,” said Brown.
LONDON, June 29 (LSN) – Dianne Blood, who got permission last year from a British court to be impregnated with her deceased husband’s sperm, announced Saturday she is pregnant. The sperm was extracted from her husband before he died, while he was in a coma. The court approved the procedure even though British law forbids fertilization without written permission from the sperm donor.
VATICAN, June 29 (LSN) – In a recent meeting with bishops from the southern United States, Pope John Paul II urged his confreres to remind Catholic hospitals that abortion, sterilization, and euthanasia are mortal sins. “As bishops you must remind everyone involved hospital administrators and medical personnel— that any failure to comply with this prohibition is both a grievous sin and a source of scandal,” he said.
Yesterday we reported on the confusion generated by feminist language, in the story entitled, UN FEMINISTS CONCEALING ENFORCED PREGNANCY DEFINITION. A UN conference participant corrected the report as follows: A journalist was interviewing a Chinese woman in Beijing about a slogan being used in by those promoting homosexual rights. Asked whether she agreed with rights for lesbians, the Chinese woman said, “Yes, but where is Lesbia?”
WASHINGTON, June 26 (LSN) – Actress Jane Fonda, wife of media mogul Ted Turner, attacked Christians in a verbal barrage against abstinence-only sexual education that rivaled her husbands controversial population control remarks. During an address to the National Press Club on Wednesday she was asked why Christians do not agree with her contraceptive approach to curbing teen pregnancy and favour an abstinence only program. Fonda responded, “They don’t care about children that don’t look like them. They don’t care about children that are not white, middle-class Christians… As far as they’re concerned, others can be eliminated This is a holy […]
WASHINGTON, June 26 (LSN) – A pro-life victory in the US House of Representatives occurred Wednesday as the House voted 223-202 to forbid the use of taxpayer money to develop, test or approve abortion-inducing drugs. Rep. Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma) sponsored the amendment saying that the drug is for “killing babies” and thus would violate the mandate of the Federal Drug Administration to approve only those drugs which are “safe and effective.” Judie Brown, head of American Life League thanked Coburn and urged Americans to thank the representatives who voted for the funding ban.
HOWELL, Michigan, June 26 (LSN) – Livingston County Circuit Judge Stanley J. Latreille ruled Wednesday in a novel case that frozen embryos are not legally considered children. The case revolved around a divorced couple who is arguing over the right to decide the fate of the embryos. The judge ruled in favour of the husband, John Mobley, thus forbidding the wife, Sara Bohn, from implanting the embryos in order to bring them to full gestational development. Bohn, mother of the embryos, contested her husband’s request that the clinic holding the embryos destroy them, saying that the destruction would constitute murder. […]
TORONTO, June 26 (LSN) – The June 11-17 edition of NOW magazine reported that Dalton McGuinty, leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, met with a homosexual-activist group to garner support for the upcoming provincial elections. According to NOW, McGuinty promised to “change provincial law so that gay couples enjoy the same status as common-law heterosexual unions, including adoption rights.” Responding to a comment from one of the group that the Catholic school system should not be permitted to fire gay teachers, McGuinty, who claims to be Catholic, responded “I agree with you entirely.”
ROME, June 26 (LSN) – Feminists lobbying at the International Criminal Court (ICC) conference, as part of the powerful Women’s Caucus for Gender Justice, are refusing to define terms such as “enforced pregnancy” and “gender persecution”. International delegates and media have been repeatedly requesting such definitions according to a report issued today by the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (CAFHRI). Although Women’s Caucus representatives have previously insisted that the term “forced pregnancy” refers, in part, to the denial of access to abortion, the feminists are now refusing to define the term as an obvious strategy to obtain approval for […]
BOSTON, June 25 (LSN) – A study released in today’s New England Journal of Medicine once again reveals the lies of the pro-abortion movement promotion of the abortion drug misoprostol. The drug, which is usually used to combat ulcers, is one of the key ingredients in the touted abortion drug RU-486. The study focussed on Brazil where the drug is available over the counter and used frequently to attempt abortions. The study headed up by Anne Pastuszak of the University of Toronto noted that the drug failed to abort the babies 80 per cent of the time and the effects […]
ROME, June 25 (LSN) – The June 18 edition of The Wanderer reports that Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith severely criticizes the UN in the prologue to a new book by Professor Michael Schooyans entitled The Gospel in the Face of World Disorder. The Cardinal exposes the intent of the various UN conferences as the promotion of a “new world order”, a “new man” and a “new anthropology.” The cardinal also notes that the image of women presented in the UN conferences is based on “a philosophy of egoism fearing motherhood […]
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, June 25 (LSN) – In what is being described as a miraculous recovery, Dr. James Dobson returned to work at Focus on the Family on Tuesday, only one week after having suffered a mild stroke which landed him in hospital. James and his wife Shirley expressed thanks to God and to all their pro-family friends who held them in their prayers.
OTTAWA, June 25 (LSN) – Yesterday, Statistics Canada released a report noting that “births in Canada declined for a sixth consecutive year in 1996,” and the “trend shows no sign of reversing.” The study also says that “the total fertility rate has remained practically unchanged at 1.6 children per woman for several years.” Given that the replacement fertility rate needs to be 2.1 children, were it not for immigration, Canada would be a dying country. “In the absence of immigration,” says the report, “it is essential that some women have a third child to maintain current population levels.” Statistics Canada […]
BATTLEFORD, Sask., June 25 (LSN) – Last Friday, Randy Kirkham, the crown prosecutor in the original Robert Latimer trial, was found not guilty of obstruction of justice. He was alleged to have attempted to stack the jury for the trial. Court of Queen’s Bench Justice George Baynton said that what happened in the case was not “proper or appropriate,” however, “there is nothing inherently evil or criminal about council getting background information on prospective jurors with a view to utilizing that information in the selection of the jurors.” Latimer’s conviction in that trial was overturned, because of allegations the crown […]
OTTAWA, June 24 (LSN) – Hoping to escape politically dangerous territory, the Chretien government has once again decided to allow the courts to legislate on the issue of homosexual rights. Following an announcement that the government will not contest the Ontario Court of Appeal’s ruling in the Rosenberg case, federal justice minister Anne McLellan added that the definition of spouse in other federal laws wold be dealt with in the courts as well. In an interesting twist, Michael Markwick of the Catholic Civil Rights League said the law should allow benefits in other relationships, if it is to be fair. […]
LANGLEY, BC, June 24 (LSN) – Dr Guy Saffold, executive vice-president of Trinity Western University in B.C., issued a paper yesterday on the possible implications of the Supreme Court of Canada’s Vriend decision for churches and church institutions. Trinity Western is an evangelical Christian university. In the Vriend decision, the Supreme Court ruled that a gay lab instructor who was fired from an Edmonton Christian college should have been able to file a complaint under human rights laws. Dr Saffold notes that discrimination against homosexuals “is considered legally no different from discrimination on the grounds of race or religion” and […]
WASHINGTON, June 24 (LSN) – On Tuesday the U.S. House Judiciary Committee passed the Child Custody Protection Ac,t thus clearing the way for a vote on the bill in the House slated for July. The bill would make it illegal for adults to thwart state parental consent and notification laws regarding abortions for minors by transporting pregnant girls across state lines. Violators of the law would face a fine of $100,000 and a year in jail.
ORLANDO, Fla., June 24 (LSN) – Last week the National Right to Life Committee unveiled pro-life television commercials to be aired on local television across the country later this year. According to the press release, one ad shows Mother Teresa speaking against abortion. Another shows a female doctor explaining why she would never provide an abortion. An ad from a different approach shows a baby kicking and crying while a voice in the background describes how a partial-birth abortion is conducted five to six months into a pregnancy.
LONDON, England, June 23 (LSN) – The British House of Commons voted 336 to 129 yesterday to lower the age of consent for homosexual sex from 18 to 16. Bowing to pressure from gay activist groups, MPs ignored the heads of the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church in England, who joined in a last-minute appeal to Parliament against the move. MPs also rejected an amendment intended to protect those under the age of 18 from predatory sexual advances from adults in a position of authority. The leading gay activist group Outrage staged a demonstration outside the Commons […]
NEW YORK, June 23 (LSN) – The United Nations group to ensure compliance with the UN’s version of “women’s rights” reconvened Monday for a three week session. During the session the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women will hear reports from South Africa, Slovakia, Nigeria, Panama, the United Republic of Tanzania, New Zealand, Peru, and Korea. At previous meetings, CEDAW has chastised countries with restrictions on abortion, and pressed them to live up to their UN “obligations” to protect women’s “reproductive health.”
OTTAWA, June 23 (LSN) – Foreign affairs minister Lloyd Axworthy introduced a document Canada prepared for the United Nations at the Vienna Plus-Five Global Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Forum on Human Rights underway in Ottawa. The conference, which ends tomorrow, is yet another attempt to push the UN’s version of human rights, which includes the “right” to abortion on demand. The Canadian document, “For the record, 1997: The United Nationshuman rights system,” is a six-volume “overview of the international human rights situation as documented by independent UN experts.” The report targets countries for noncompliance with the UN’s “human rights” demands, and […]
VANCOUVER, B.C., June 23 (LSN) – British Columbia’s NDP government introduced legislation Monday to give pension benefits to same-sex couples. The government prides itself on making B.C. the first Canadian province to do this voluntarily without pressure from the courts, as was the case in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Last year, the B.C. government became the first in North America to define “spouse” to include gay and lesbian couples. The change has given such couples privileges on a par with married people.
OTTAWA, June 23 (LSN) – Federal Justice Minister Anne McLellan announced Monday that the government will not appeal the Ontario Court of Appeal’s ruling in the Rosenberg case. The court found the federal Income Tax Act’s definition of “spouse” unconstitutional, because it “excludes” gay and lesbian couples. The Reform Party had pressed the Liberals to appeal the ruling. Reform leader Preston Manning said his party’s stance was intended not only to curb the phenomenon of judicial activism and restore the supremacy of Parliament, but also to protect the Canadian family. Reform’s official policy is that marriage is a union of […]
KAMPALA, Uganda, June 22 (LSN) – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) embarked today on another venture to spread abortion on demand across the globe, with the “Expert Round-table Meeting on Ensuring Reproductive Rights, and Implementing Sexual and Reproductive Health Programmes, Including Women’s Empowerment, Male Involvement and Human Rights.” The meeting will continue until June 25. It is part of an ongoing process to ensure national compliance with pro-abortion interpretation of agreements reached at recent UN conferences, especially the 1994 Cairo population conference.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, June 22 (LSN) – Planned Parenthood and other abortionists and pro-abortion groups including the American Civil Liberties Union filed suit last Thursday against the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, for refusing to force taxpayers to pay for abortions. Responding to requests from Alaskans, the state government decided to leave abortion clients to pay for the “procedure” themselves.
GLENSIDE, PA, June 22 (LSN) – In a press release last week, the Chester County Pro-Life Coalition said the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW) used restricted information and public funds to support a marketing campaign for Planned Parenthood. According to the release, the DPW sent a mailing last year to all Medicaid recipients, giving them a toll- free number to call for “family planning” assistance. People calling the line were directed to Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the state and in the nation. In January, 1998, a Planned Parenthood brochure was mailed in an unmarked envelope to […]
OTTAWA, June 22 (LSN) – In a May 25 ruling, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal decided that exposing the truth about a person or group is illegal in Canada, if it could be interpreted to open the person or group to “hatred or contempt.” Columnist Rory Leishman covered the story June 15 in the London Free Press. At issue was Ernst Zundel’s attempts to justify his absurd denial of the Jewish holocaust. The tribunal, led by Claude Pensa, said the truth or falsity of Zundel’s claims is irrelevant. “The truth in some absolute sense really plays no role. Rather, it […]
WASHINGTON, June 19 (LSN) – Abortion advocates in the U.S. celebrated this week as the House of Representatives passed a measure 28-26 to force federal employee health-care plans to cover contraceptives, including abortifacient pills and devices. Abortion activist Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., gloated over her victory, saying, “We framed it as an issue that shouldn’t be pro-choice or pro-life.” Lowey also noted the measure will affect 91% of the health-care plans in question, which placed restrictions on which methods of “family planning” they would cover.
ROME, June 19 (LSN) – The Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (CAFHRI) reported today from that protests from certain countries has triggered a special debate on the proposal to include “enforced pregnancy” as a war crime in the mandate for the United Nation’s new International Criminal Court. CAFHRI reports UN feminists said the term “enforced pregnancy” was already entrenched in the document, and thus could not be debated any further. The objections arose on Wednesday in the Committee of the Whole, (the body charged with negotiating the final text of the ICC treaty) and caused the issue to be […]
KELWONA, June 19 (LSN) – At a meeting of the Okanagan-Similkameen Public Health Region on Wednesday, vice-chair Ellen McRae announced that Kelwona General Hospital may begin committing abortions on January 1, 1999. Nearly 100 pro-lifers demonstrated outside the hospital on Monday in protest of the coming announcement. The Okanagan-Similkameen was the only district in B.C. in which abortions were not committed. Health officials in the region are considering flying in abortionists, since no local doctors are willing to provide the “service.”
RALEIGH, N.C., June 19 (LSN) – Yesterday the Wall Street Journal reported on U.S. Drs Stephen D. Mumford and Elton Kessel, who are using a permanent sterilization drug on poor women in the Third World, with the financial support of population-control advocates in the U.S. Quinacrine, as the drug is known, is inserted into the uterus in two doses one month apart, and irreversibly scars the fallopian tubes. Known side effects include “abnormal menstrual bleeding, backaches, fever, abdominal pain, and headaches.” The drug is banned in the U.S., because scientists fear it causes cancer. Mumford, head of the Center for […]
BEIJING, June 18 (LSN) – On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao attacked condemnations of the Chinese one-child policy made last week by a former abortionist in the government’s “family planning” programme. “We oppose some people using this to distort our nation’s birth control policy and politicizing this problem,” he said. Apparently referring to the myth of “over-population,” the spokesman dismissed widespread human-rights violations in China, saying, “The Chinese government’s promotion of its birth control policy is a dual responsibility for the Chinese people and the world’s people,” he said. Gao Xiao Duan, a former abortionist in a government […]
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., June 18 (LSN) – Dr. James Dobson, head of Focus on the Family, has suffered a mild stroke, and “is now under medical observation and resting comfortably while undergoing a series of tests and procedures to better determine his condition,” according to Focus spokesman Paul Hetrick. Prayers for his speedy recovery are requested.
TORONTO, June 18 (LSN) – A report on CBC Newsworld Tuesday detailed a study published in yesterday’s Journal of the American Medical Association, which found pain management for nursing home residents with cancer is woefully inadequate. Although the study was undertaken in the US, Toronto cancer specialist Dr. Mary Vachon said her research has uncovered the same problem in Canada. The host of the segment, Dr. Brian Goldman, said that British research indicates up to 90 per cent of cancer pain can be relieved with proper pain management. Pro-life commentators point out that effective pain management is a crucial factor […]
NEW YORK, June 18 (LSN) – On Tuesday, Olara A. Otunnu, Special Representative of the Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflict, added his voice to the chorus of calls for the International Criminal Court to include “sexual violence” in its jurisdiction. “The crime of rape and other forms of sexual violence in the context of armed conflict should be defined as a war crime, with provision for the severest punishment,” he said. Recalling that in UN parlance crimes of “sexual violence” include “forced pregnancy” the denial of abortion on demand the statement takes on an ominous quality. To […]
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, June 17 (LSN) – Yesterday, the 16th Asian and Oceanic Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, taking place in Kuala Lumpur, heard alarming statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the number of abortions being committed in Asia and around the world. It was reported that in India 6.7 million legal abortions are committed every year. The WHO also estimates 150,000 abortions are committed every day around the world, resulting in an annual holocaust of almost 55 million lives.
ROME, June 17 (LSN) – Archbishop Renato Martino, apostolic nuncio and permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, addressed the conference on the proposed International Criminal Court yesterday, saying the I.C.C. should be formulated in such a way as to avoid falling prey to “political concerns and pressures” which “reflect the particular rather than the universal.” The Vatican representative also said the Catholic Church’s principle concern in the conference is to ensure the “protection of the dignity of the human person.”“This dignity is shared by every human person, regardless of his age, race, ethnic origin, status as […]
ROME, June 17 (LSN) – Bill Richardson, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, addressed delegates this morning at the UN conference on establishing an International Criminal Court, proposing limits on the reach of the proposed court and the process of triggering prosecutions. Richardson warned the court must not act as “a human rights ombudsman.” He also suggested the U.N. Security Council or a signatory state should be responsible for bringing forward cases for the court to pursue rather than allowing the court’s prosecutor to do so. Justice Richard Goldstone, the first chief prosecutor of the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda tribunals, […]
ROME, June 17 (LSN) – Canada has emerged as a leader in the push for the most radical version of an International Criminal Court (ICC), demanding a world power with universal, unchecked jurisdiction. According to this view, the court would act to stamp out any discrepancy with the United Nations’ version of “human rights”—including the “crime” of “enforced pregnancy,” or the lack of abortion on demand. In his speech Monday at the UN conference in Rome to establish a permanent ICC, Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy said “the Court should be sensitive to gender issues and both the Statute and […]
WASHINGTON, June 16 (LSN) – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott was attacked today by homosexual activist groups and the media for expressing the traditional Christian understanding of homosexuality. In a taping session for “The Armstrong Williams Show” to be broadcast nationally this week, Lott was asked if he believes homosexual activity is a sin. “Yeah, it is,” Lott replied, adding, “You should still love that person You should not try to mistreat them or treat them as outcasts You should try to show them a way to deal with that problem, just like alcohol … or sex addiction … […]
WACO, Texas, June 16 (LSN) – Norma McCorvey, “Jane Roe” in the 1973 Roe v. Wade United States Supreme Court case, which led to the establishment of a constitutional “right” to abortion, announced Sunday she plans to become a Catholic. McCorvey rejected her pro-abortion past and became a Christian and a pro- lifer in 1995.
ROME, June 16 (LSN) – Yesterday, the opening day of the United Nations Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Establishment of an International Criminal Court (ICC), it appeared the United Nations will be successful in gaining acceptance of a powerful, independent court with universal jurisdiction. The United States has serious reservations, but is experiencing enormous pressure from other countries to agree. Perhaps referring to the Americans’ position, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan told reporters, “No one country, I hope, will want to be responsible for the failure of this conference.” The Canadian delegation, among many others, is challenging the U.S. […]
OTTAWA, June 16 (LSN) – Writing in The Globe and Mail today, Reform Party leader Preston Manning criticized judicial activism, the phenomenon of judges making laws rather than simply interpreting them. Inspired by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, such activism has been responsible for Canada’s lawlessness with regard to abortion, and the explosion of “gay rights” in recent years. Manning placed the blame for the problem squarely on the shoulders of the Liberal government, which he claims “bring bills to Parliament that are deliberately fuzzy on intent,” thus transferring “power by default from Parliament to the courts.” Manning illustrated […]
ROME, June 15 (LSN) – Media around the globe today announced that Pope John Paul II gave his support to the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Sunday. In his comments on Sunday, the pope said, “I hope that the work of this important conference will be inspired by the desire to appropriately safeguard basic and inalienable human rights.” The pontiff added, “While assuring the Holy See’s active contribution to the work of this important conference, I send my best wishes to all participants that this meeting will be an historic moment on the path of mutual understanding between peoples.” Some […]
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., June 15 (LSN) – Last Thursday, Florida Governor Lawton Chiles vetoed legislation which required young pregnant girls from 12-18 years of age to at least inform their parents of their intent to procure an abortion. According to John Dowless, director of the Christian Coalition of Florida, Chiles demonstrated an “incredible…lack of concern for life and the value of life” in his decision to veto the bill, at the behest of abortionists and the American Civil Liberties Union. The proposed law required only notification of parents, not parental consent.
CAPE TOWN, South Africa, June 15 (LSN) – Last week, Bishop Desmond Tutu’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission presented the conclusions of an investigation into the population-control tactics used against blacks during apartheid. The commission found that army scientists in South Africa engaged in biological and chemical warfare against blacks in the country. Dr Daan Goosen, a scientist involved in the population-control scheme, confessed to the committee that the major aim of his work was development of a chemical sterilization agent to be used to suppress the fertility of blacks.. “We realized we might not achieve 100 percent sterilization (of blacks) […]
ROME, June 15 (LSN) – Final deliberations for the proposed International Criminal Court (ICC) began in Rome today. Delegates from over 180 countries will grapple with the final wording of the document, including the controversial phrase “forced pregnancy” in the list of war crimes the court would prosecute. Unlike the current World Court in the Hague, which deals with disputes between nations, the new court will have the power to prosecute individuals and groups for “crimes against humanity.” Because “forced pregnancy” seems clearly to refer to the lack of legalized abortion, pro-lifers fear the ICC will be used to persecute […]
JEFFERSON, Wis., June 15 (LSN) – On Tuesday, the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors voted 18-11 to reject a renewal of a lease to a Planned Parenthood office in the county’s health department building. The supervisors decided the pro-abortion group had no place in a county building given their “extremely controversial” status.
WASHINGTON, June 12 (LSN) – A panel of the U.S. House of Representatives passed a measure to ensure state laws requiring parental notification of abortions are upheld, by making it illegal for non-custodians to take pregnant girls to out-of-state abortuaries to avoid the notification requirement. The measure will thus be discussed and voted on in the House in the coming weeks. U.S. pro-lifers are urged to contact their House and Senate Representatives to support the legislation.
WASHINGTON, June 12 (LSN) – On Tuesday the U.S. Justice Department launched a lawsuit against 17 pro- lifers, including Operation Rescue national director Flip Benham. The suit, filed under Clinton’s 1994 Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, claims the pro-lifers blocked access to the Capitol Women’s Center abortuary in Washington in January. The case marks the 17th time Clinton’s FACE law has been used in what pro-lifers feel amounts to a denial of their first-amendment rights to free speech. Rev. Benham has endured particularly strong legal persecution in recent months. Last week, he and another pro-life demonstrator, Tom […]
OTTAWA, June 12 (LSN) – On Tuesday, the Medical Post reported that the idea of offering a $500,000 reward for tips on three abortionist shootings appeared as an agenda item at a recent meeting of the Canadian Medical Association’s board of directors. The Canadian pro-life community is also hoping the perpetrators are brought to justice. Leaders point out that pro-lifers are opposed to all violence, and that no Canadian pro-lifer has ever been charged with any act of aggression in defence of preborn children, contrary to the usual media line.
HALIFAX, June 12 (LSN) – The Nova Scotia Crown Prosecutor’s Office has been granted an appeal hearing October 27-28 to dispute the decision to dismiss the case against respirologist Nancy Morrison. Morrison was charged with murder for the “mercy-killing” of patient Paul Mills. At the hearing the judge will determine whether the Crown has enough evidence to appeal the decision and re-open the case. Pro-euthanasia activists have campaigned hard on Morrison’s behalf, and have recently taken out advertisements encouraging people to contact the Attorney General’s Office regarding the renewed prosecution effort. Pro-life leaders are also encouraging supporters to contact the […]
LINCOLN, Neb., June 11 (LSN) – Dawn Bixler, mother of 16-year-old Dallas Mills, is being sued by Doug and Sharon Detmer, parents of Leanne Detmer, also 16, for having permitted the teenage couple to have sex. The girl conceived a child and aborted the baby, and suffered “extensive psychological and physical damage,” as a result. On Tuesday, District Judge Jeffre Cheuvront refused to dismiss the case, noting that although the sexual relationship was “consensual,” the question of whether the boy’s mother had a “duty to act” to stop it remains. Bixler is being sued for $11,371 (US) for the cost […]
TORONTO, June 11 (LSN) – Yesterday, Ontario Premier Mike Harris praised the decision of Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman to march in Toronto’s Gay Pride parade June 28. “He has shown a lot of courage There is a lot of interest. It seems to me it brings a lot of tourism dollars to Toronto,” Harris told reporters. Although Harris will be in North Bay during the event, Citizenship Minister Isabel Bassett will attend the event for the Tories. “I have been on a float in the Gay Pride Parade for the last two years,” she said. “If I’m free that day, […]
OTTAWA, June 11 (LSN) – Planned Parenthood is financing an effort to lobby the Canadian government to funnel more tax dollars into the movement for global abortion on demand. A new non-governmental organization calling itself Action Canada for Population and Development (ACPD) was launched recently at the National Press Club in Ottawa. ACPD head Katherine McDonald said, “The purpose of the panel is to draw attention to Canada’s lack of commitment to international family planning in terms of…finances,” said McDonald. “Family planning” in such circles invariably means sterilization and abortion.
WASHINGTON, June 11 (LSN) – Gao Xiao Duan, a former worker in a government “birth control office” in China, testified before the U.S. Congress Wednesday that China’s one-child policy has resulted in horrific human- rights abuses, including forced abortions and sterilizations, the killing of live-born babies, the imprisonment of offending women, and the destruction of their homes. Congressmen also heard that Duan’s population-control office paid for information on “illegal” pregnancies. A video smuggled out of the country showed the birth control office, including an operating room for abortions and a jail cell for noncompliant women. “I did so many brutal […]
DETROIT, June 10 (LSN) – BC pro-lifer Ted Gerk has alerted pro-lifers to an on-line survey about Kevorkian and organ transplants. OTTAWA, June 10 (LSN) – On Monday night, Reform MPs managed to pass a motion stripping the Liberal government of its power to invoke “closure” to shut down parliamentary debate. They intended the measure to send a message to the Liberals, none of whom was present in the House at the time. It will allow opposition MPs the opportunity to prolong debate on government business. The Government has threatened to force the House to remain in session until 4 a.m. June 23, to break the “filibuster” tactic.
TORONTO, June 10 (LSN) – Toronto’s Mayor Mel Lastman announced yesterday he would march in the Gay Pride parade June 28. The Toronto Sun reported that the mayor made his decision in consultation with Kyle Rae, the gay city councillor who was responsible for bringing the event to Toronto in 1981. Rae predicted there would be protest, but only from a “vocal minority.” Toronto pro-family supporters are asked to contact Mayor Lastman and ask him to reconsider his intention to participate in the event. Mayor Mel Lastman 7th Floor, Metro Hall 55 John Street Toronto, ON M5V 3C6 Phone: (416) […]
TORONTO, June 10 (LSN) – In response to pro-life evangelist Rev. Ken Campbell’s full-page Globe and Mail advertisement condemning the Supreme Court’s Vriend decision, gay activist Philip Shea has demanded punitive action from the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC). Shea described the April 18 advertisement as a “hateful full-page diatribe aimed at lesbians and gay men.” One-third of the ad was written by John McKellar, leader oaf group called Homosexuals Opposed to Pride Extremism—homosexual Canadians who “love Canada, respect its traditions, institutions and values, and reject the radical demands for “rights” based on sexual orientation.” In his official complaint Shea […]
HITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo., June 9 (LSN) – Sgt. Todd Parish, a pro-life Christian, has objected to the mandatory vaccination of his children at an army base school in Germany, because he says the vaccinations were derived from the tissues of aborted babies. According to Parish, chicken pox, hepatitis A and rubella vaccines are all objectionable for this reason. Donna Cary, a spokesperson for Varivax (chicken pox vaccine) makers Merck & Co. Inc., said, “Merck does not see this as fetal tissue, per se Someone took a small sample of cells and put them on a petri dish 30 […]
DETROIT, June 9 (LSN) – Oakland County medical examiner L.J. Dragovic says the body of Joseph Tushkowski, a recent victim of Kevorkian-assisted-suicide, was mutilated. Dragovic also judged the death a homicide. “They didn’t remove his sweater. They just pulled it up, then cut the belly,” Dragovic told reporters on Monday. “This is not a situation to be compared with the highly skilled act of organ procurement surgery…. We’re talking about a chopped-up body.” Kevorkian announced recently he had “donor organs” available for transplant from a recent assisted-suicide victim.
OTTAWA, June 9 (LSN) – In a recent press release, the Canadian Family Action Council alerted concerned citizens that the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is holding public forums to discuss programming. The Family Action Council encourages Canadians to support Christian broadcasting, which is subject to arbitrary “balance” requirements by the CRTC, in order to prevent single-faith broadcasting. Pro-family Canadians have long argued that there is a demand for more wholesome programming on Canadian airwaves; and it appears the CRTC initiative provides an opportunity to make the case once more. Written comments on Public Notice CRTC 1998-44, Canadian Television […]
OTTAWA, June 9 (LSN) – At the annual convention of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women (NAC), the nation’s leading feminist group decided temporarily to refuse the government’s offer of 8 million tax-payer dollars for the coming year, protesting an accountability requirement the government introduced this spring. The federal government now requires that NAC submit the plans of their projects for consideration before funding is granted. NAC also demanded that their funding be increased from to $30 million per year. Women’s groups representing the concerns of mainstream Canadian women, such as REAL Women of Canada, are denied […]
WASHINGTON, June 8 (LSN) – On Friday, Attorney General Janet Reno forbade agents of the US Drug Enforcement Administration to act on the advice of their chief, Thomas Constantine, who warned doctors that the DEA would revoke the licenses of those who prescribed lethal drugs under Oregon’s new law permitting physician-assisted suicide. Reno said that “There is no evidence the Congress, in the Controlled Substances Act, intended to assign DEA the novel role of resolving (what the Supreme Court last year called) the ‘earnest and profound debate about the morality, legality and practicality of physician-assisted suicide.’” Lori Hougens of the […]
PRINCE GEORGE, B.C., June 8 (LSN) – Former British Columbia premier Bill Vander Zalm, a staunch pro-lifer, was acclaimed president of the B.C. Reform Party at a convention on the weekend. Vander Zalm said that although he does not intend to seek the party leadership, his plans may change. The B.C. Reform Party is similar in policy to the Reform Party of Canada, but is not officially endorsed by Reform.
COLORADO SPRINGS, June 8 (LSN) – In a press release last week, Focus on the Family’s Dr. James Dobson endorsed Randall Terry as a candidate in New York’s 26th Congressional District. Terry, the founder and former leader of Operation Rescue, also received endorsement from Norma McCorvey, “Jane Roe” in the 1973 Roe v. Wade United States Supreme Court case, which led to the establishment of a constitutional “right” to abortion. McCorvey converted to the pro-life position, and to Christianity, in 1995. Two conservative party associations have also thrown their support behind Terry. The Conservative Party of Tompkins County, N.Y. and […]
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., June 8 (LSN) – On Sunday, assisted-suicide pioneer Jack Kevorkian announced at a news conference that he had the kidneys of his most recent victim, Joseph Tushowski of Las Vegas, Nevada, available for transplant. Kevorkian claimed to have received 20 calls from interested parties including three from doctors. The Oakland County Medical Examiner’s office is looking into the situation. Medical experts said when Kevorkian first floated the idea earlier this year that because of Kevorkian’s assisted suicide methods, organs from his victims would be useless for transplant.
LIMA, June 5 (LSN) – Catholic World News (CWN) reported this week that the covert scheme to sterilize poor women in Peru—often without their consent—has crumbled, thanks to pressure from Catholic bishops and various pro-life groups. Sources within Peru’s Ministry of Health say sterilization have decreased by 68%, due to “a dramatic lack of confidence both in the method and in health agents.” One of the leaders in the push for population control in the country, Jorge Parra, director of the Reproductive Health and Planned Parenthood program, said, “Obviously, we will not reach our annual goal to perform 78,000 tubal […]
LONDON, June 5 (LSN) – Following legal advice, London City Council voted to proclaim a Gay Pride Day for the city, ending a three-year struggle. Last year, the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) sided with The Homophile Association of London Ontario (HALO), a gay activist group, and found Mayor Dianne Haskett and the city guilty of discrimination for not making the proclamation in 1995. The Commission levied heft fines against the mayor and the city, and ordered them to proclaim the controversial event if asked again. Haskett refused to vote on the question this time around, citing a conflict of […]
OTTAWA, June 5 (LSN) – Reported in yesterday’s Calgary Sun, a new Statistics Canada study shows common-law relationships are 49% more likely to break up than marriages. The Sun article made links between this reality and the well-being of children. Writer Licia Corbella pointed out that “the growing rate of family breakdown is one factor in the climbing rate of child poverty, since research has found more than 50% of female-led single-parent families have incomes below Statscan’s poverty-level cutoff.” Moreover, Corbella notes that “US data suggests children reared by one birth parent are twice as likely to drop out of […]
COLORADO SPRINGS, June 5 (LSN) – In a press release issued yesterday, Focus on the Family’s Dr. James Dobson sent a warning to Republican politicians that they must remain true to the pro-life, pro-family voters who put them in office. Dr. Dobson issued the letter in response to a statement by former president Gerald Ford urging Republicans to distance themselves from pro-life “zealots” in order to win votes. “If ‘extreme-right’ partisans within the GOP control the party’s policies and dictate its choice of a presidential candidate for the 2000 elections, the party will lose at the polls” Ford claimed. Dobson […]

OTTAWA, June 4 (LSN) – MP Eric Lowther, Reform Party family caucus chair, urged pro-family Canadians to pressure the Liberal government to appeal the April 23rd Rosenberg decision in which the Ontario Court of Appeal “read in” a same-sex definition of the word “spouse” into the federal Income Tax Act. Lowther notes that since “the Income Tax Act is federal legislation, it is the federal government which would have to appeal this decision [however] the Liberal government has not acted, even though the deadline for them to do so is June 23rd. Lowther said the Reform Party will raise the […]
VANCOUVER, June 4 (LSN) – Edward Hewlett, President of British Columbia Parents and Teachers for Life, requested prayers from Canada’s pro-life community for two upcoming court battles which threaten religious freedom in Canadian Christian schools. From June 15-17, the B. C. College of Teachers (BCCT) will be in court, appealing the B.C. Supreme Court’s decision in favour of Trinity Western University (TWU), a private evangelical school facing discrimination at the hands of the BCCT, because of TWU’s biblical code of morality. BCCT wants to refuse to certify teachers trained at TWU as unsuitable to teach in public schools. According to […]

ORLANDO, Fla., June 4 (LSN) – Rev. Flip Benham, national director of Operation Rescue, and another pro-life demonstrator, Tom McGlade, were arrested yesterday on allegations they violated a temporary Orlando city injunction which forbids pro-lifers to pray, sing and use amplification devices within 1,000 feet of abortuaries. The city obtained the injunction in anticipation of pro-life demonstrations against Disney, for the corporation’s gay-friendly policies and products, and Barnes and Noble Booksellers, for selling books which many describe as “child pornography.”
Yesterday we reported Campaign Life Coalition was leading Ontario pro-life groups in lobbying the provincial government for conscience legislation and the de-funding of abortion. In fact, while CLC plays a crucial role in the movement for conscience legislation, it is the Coalition for Conscience, an umbrella organization of diverse individuals and groups working for the same end, which is leading the effort. Also, many groups are currently lobbying for the defunding of abortion—notably, Ontarians for Ending Tax- Funded Abortions, and the Knights of Columbus. CLC fully supports their efforts.
VANCOUVER, June 3 (LSN) – The University of British Columbia has expanded its abortion training electives, from students in the obstetrics and gynecology to all upper-level medical students, due to pro-abortion lobbying. One such group within the university known as Medical Students for Choice has teamed up with local abortionists such as Ellen Wiebe to push the University to require abortion training for all medical students in their 1st and 2nd years at UBC rather than having the courses offered as an elective. The pro-abortion students group will also be involved in curriculum formation for the expanded […]
LONDON, June 3 (LSN) – The laxity of Britain’s abortion law was revealed last week in a case of a woman who has had two abortions, and was seeking a third, because she feared the children might inherit some of their fathers’ facial characteristics which the woman found disagreeable. The law, which in practice allows abortion on demand, is supposed to permit abortions only if two doctors think there is substantial risk to the physical or mental health of the mother. According to a report in Sunday’s Electronic Telegraph, the woman felt her first partner was too short, […]
VANCOUVER, June 3 (LSN) – The Vancouver Province reported yesterday that the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) paid out an undisclosed settlement to the adoptive parents of a child disabled by an attempted abortion in order to avoid a pending medical-malpractice suit. Twelve-year-old Ximena Renaerts has profound mental and physical disabilities resulting from an attempted abortion at a clinic in Washington state. She was born alive at Vancouver General Hospital three days three days later, on Dec. 17, 1985. Ximena’s birth mother went to VGH for complications with her abortion, and court documents indicate that a […]
TORONTO, June 3 (LSN) – Ontario NDP health critic Marion Boyd demanded in the legislature yesterday that the government must guarantee the St Michael’s-Wellesley hospital takeover will not result in fewer abortions. Since the government-mandated takeover, St Michael’s has announced abortions and some other “services” will no longer be available at the Wellesley site. “Can you guarantee that this [restructuring plan] means the 1,300 or more abortions that were performed last year at the Wellesley will be performed in the next year at the Toronto East General?” Boyd asked Health Minister Elizabeth Witmer. Boyd’s devotion to […]
TORONTO, June 2 (LSN) – NDP MPP Frances Lankin is fuming over the stoppage of abortions at St. Michaels Hospital’s newly merged Wellesley site. Today’s Toronto Sun reports her as saying, “That’s 1,000 to 1,500 abortion procedures per year that will no longer be available to this community.” Outraged that the Tory government has allowed St. Mike’s the choice not to commit abortions Lankin said, “the silence (from Health Minister Elizabeth Witmer) is deafening.” The NDP has called on the Tories to force the Catholic hospital to violate its principles and permit abortions at its Wellesley […]
TORONTO, June 2 (LSN) – Two weeks ago, Bishop Roman Danylak, of the Ukrainian Eparchy of Toronto, issued a press release calling for the “restoration of Catholic teaching” in the Canadian Catholic School system The bishop notes that, despite dedicated teachers and expensive programs, children are not adequately instructed in moral issues and recognizes much of the blame is due to “gravely flawed” instructional material. One such program is the Ontario Fully Alive “family life” series which Bishop Danylak says “is woefully deficient in its treatment of moral principles.”“The Fully Alive program is not a program […]
LONDON, ON, June 2 (LSN) – Delegates at a Reform Party biennial convention last weekend passed resolutions mandating a “Family Assessment test” for pertinent legislation and also a resolution demanding accountability to Parliament by all official Canadian delegations to the UN. The measures were the result of hard work by the pro-life, pro-family community and the unwavering commitment of Reform's family critic, MP Eric Lowther. The Family Assessment test would ensure that all pertinent proposed legislation would be assessed for its impact on the family. Criteria such as whether or not it replaces the responsibility of parents […]
OTTAWA, June 2 (LSN) – The current issue of Alberta Report magazine warns of a coming change to Canadian Criminal Code “Sections 318 and 319, adding ‘sexual orientation' to “colour, race, religion or ethnic origin' as statutory grounds for hate-crimes prosecutions.” The article reported on a government funded survey of “gays, lesbians and bisexuals” being undertaken by the gay activist group Equality for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere (EGALE) which is expected to cost Canadian taxpayers almost $400,000. Numerous indicators of a coming change in the law to persecute pro-family Canadians were presented: —Secretary of State for […]
OTTAWA, June 1 (LSN) – The 1998 Report of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, released last week, indicates the grim consequences Canada faces for its anti-life, anti-family policies at home and abroad. One section of the report, Population Aging and Information for Parliament: Understanding the Choices, details economic implications of Canada’s dismal demographic situation, especially how the country will soon face grave difficulties caring for a disproportionately large number of senior citizens. “Unless our productivity somehow increases significantly or patterns of work and retirement change substantially, the current demographic trends suggest that the growth […]
WASHINGTON, June 1 (LSN) – On Thursday, President Clinton signed an executive order granting “minority” status to homosexuals, by adding the term “sexual orientation” to the list of prohibited grounds of discrimination in federal law. “Individuals should not be denied a job on the basis of something that has no relationship to their ability to perform their work,” Clinton said. While Clinton’s measure is restricted to the public sector, he urged Congress to pass similar legislation across the board.
WASHINGTON, June 1 (LSN) – At the recent “Values Summit” with Republican Speaker Newt Gingrich, several staunch pro-life leaders appeared to take an “incrementalist” approach to the abortion issue, says an article in today’s U.S. News and World Report. Apparently, Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, Phyllis Schlafly of the Eagle Forum, and Rev. Lou Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition focused on plans to ban partial-birth abortion, rather than their ultimate goal of full legal protection of the right to life from conception onward. While such an approach may be pragmatic, it is controversial […]
PROVO, Utah, June 1 (LSN) – In a concise and illuminating article released Friday, Brigham Young University Law Professor Richard G. Wilkins detailed potential abuses of the United Nation’s proposed International Criminal Court (ICC). Using quotations from ICC documents, Professor Wilkins demonstrates how the UN plans to make the “denial of abortion” a “war crime,” and how certain “crimes” as defined by the ICC may “criminalize the denial of marriage to homosexuals.” He notes that the proposed court runs the “risk of expanding to condemn (and eventually eliminate) traditional cultural and religious values.” Please see the article […]
