LANSING, Michigan, Aug 6 (LSN) – Geoffrey Fieger, the outspoken lawyer who has successfully defended suicide activist Jack Kevorkian, won Michigan’s Democratic gubernatorial primary pitting him against the incumbent Republican Governor John Engler who opposes assisted suicide. Fieger’s win has served to heighten the confidence of Engler who says he will appeal to the Democrats alienated by the suicide activist defender Fieger.

WASHINGTON, Aug 6 (LSN) – A U.S. House Committee has passed on a bill to prohibit the dispensing or distribution of a federally regulated drug for the purpose of assisting a suicide. The bill was sponsored by Judiciary Chairman Henry Hyde who said he was “concerned about old people who don’t want to be a burden on their families.” The bill will be voted on in the House either in late August or later. A similar bill is working its way through the Senate.

TORONTO, Aug 5 (LSN) – The “Show the Truth ‘98” tour of Southern Ontario was such a great success that organizer Rosemary Connell has planned more showings in Ontario and across the country. A tour of North Central Ontario will take place from August 24-26 in the cities of North Bay, Sturgeon Falls, Sudbury and Parry Sound. LANSING, Michigan, Aug 5 (LSN) – Geoffrey Fieger, the outspoken lawyer who has successfully defended suicide activist Jack Kevorkian, leads Michigan’s Democratic gubernatorial primary by 2% with 93% of the vote accounted for.  According to analysts, even if Fieger wins the Democratic nomination he stands little chance of ousting incumbent Republican Governor John Engler.  However, that has not daunted Fieger who has reportedly spent more than $1 million of personal money on his campaign.  Fieger’s political style is rude, condescending. ORLANDO, Fla., Aug 5 (LSN) – The July issue of Liberator, a publication of the Liberty Counsel of Orlando, detailed the story of an injunction issued against Operation Rescue National (ORN) that was later ruled illegal by an appeals court. WASHINGTON, Aug 5 (LSN) – The Washington Post reported last week on the ever increasing number of “conversion” ministries which aim at helping those with homosexual tendencies to live free from their homosexual temptations. Strong pressure from homosexual activists has led to the rejection of such “therapies” by mainstream psychologists and psychiatrists and has left the practice booming in the mostly religiously based groups which have formed to address the need. ALBANY, N.Y., Aug 4 (LSN) – Nurses Deborah Larson and Christine Thornton who were fired from Albany Medical Center for refusing to assist in abortions were allowed to take their civil suit against the hospital to court.  Although a state Supreme Court justice refused their case last July, a state Appellate Division court ruled unanimously last Thursday that the nurses’ case should be allowed to go to trial.  Attorney Michael McDermott, who is representing Larson and Thornton, said the ruling was the first challenge to a 1971 statute which, while pretending to give employees the right to refuse to participate […]

WASHINGTON, Aug 4 (LSN) – The American Life League (ALL) announced Friday it has begun a signature drive for a “Declaration for Life,” a document revealing that the “birth control” pill is an abortifacient. A letter to this effect with an impressive list of 80 notable signatories was sent to every member of Congress.
