CANADA APOLOGETIC ABOUT NOT FORCING UN LAW ON PROVINCES

GENEVA, Nov 30 (LSN)  On Thursday and Friday an assembly of Canadian government officials met with Members of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights to discuss Canada’s compliance with the International Covenant of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.  The UN committee of “experts” demanded to know how Canada intended to fulfill its treaty obligations “since international human-rights treaties did not have automatic application in domestic law and since provincial Governments could not be forced by federal officials to adopt legislation reflecting such human-  rights standards.”  Demonstrating their distaste for the provincial autonomy enshrined in the Canadian constitution, the […]

MORE CHILD APPREHENSION HORRORS IN BC

SURREY, BC, Nov 30 (LSN)  Since the revelations in February of overzealous BC social workers who in Quensel, a small town of British Columbia, apprehended 71 children from their parents in just two months (in only 5 cases were the removals deemed appropriate by a judge), pro-family organizations have kept a close watch on the province.  One such group, the Citizen’s Research Institute (CRI) based in Surrey, reported last week on the plight of the Marcu family.  Mrs. Marciella Marcu was contacted by social worker Julie Cringle in July, 1998.  Cringle suspected Marciella of being “overly concerned” about the health […]

BRITAIN VALUES ANIMAL LIFE OVER HUMAN

LONDON, Nov 30 (LSN)  This month Britain prided itself on becoming the first European Union country to ban all testing of cosmetics on animals. One day before this announcement was made, on November 15 The Sunday Times released the results of its investigation into doctor assisted suicide noting that “one in seven of Britain’s 36,000 GPs has admitted that he or she has broken the law by helping patients to die at their request.”  The appalling disrespect for human life was also noted in Britain in 1996 when Britain’s frozen embryo scandal hit the press.  At the time it was […]

ONTARIO SPANKING BAN UPDATE

TORONTO, Nov 27 (LSN)  Yesterday, the Toronto Sun reported more details on the court case seeking to make spanking illegal in Ontario. A court date has been set for January 12. A decision by the Ontario courts to repeal section 43 would deprive parents of the right to use spanking as a form of discipline only in Ontario unless the court orders a blanket repeal.  As reported by LifeSite News a week ago, the group Justice for Children and Youth launched a challenge to Section 43 of the Criminal Code (which permits spanking), claiming that the section violates the Charter […]

EDMONTON, Nov 27 (LSN)  In Edmonton this weekend Canada will host the International Conference on Universal Rights and Human Values. In an interview Tutu urged “real tolerance” for gays and lesbians and lamented the plight of gays “in such a homophobic world.”  Interestingly, British Columbia’s Attorney […]

CANADIAN GOVERNMENT TO INTERVENE IN LATIMER CASE

OTTAWA, Nov 26 (LSN) – Yesterday, Justice Minister Anne McLellan announced that should the case of convicted “mercy-killer” Robert Latimer be heard by the Supreme Court of Canada the federal government would likely intervene. However, the minister would not divulge on what side of the issue the government would be and the press was informed that that information would not be made public until the court decides on hearing the case.  Pro-life observers are deeply concerned and suspect the government will intervene on Latimer’s behalf, since the ruling Liberal party is officially pro-assisted suicide.  At its policy convention in the […]
